For the past few months, Ryan Jones’ Guess My Word has offered a simple, though not always painless, way to breeze through downtime at work. It works in your browser, and it’s very simple: guess a word, and the software will tell you if the correct answer comes before or after. Sounds easy, right?
Hahaha! just kidding! It’s actually surprisingly hard and will make you realize how old you are at reciting the alphabet in your head. The game offers a “normal” and “hard” word to try each day. You can go until you win, or leave as exit and come back the next day for a new word. Once you’re done, you can check the leaderboards to see where you’re landing. Like any good word of the day game, it encourages you to try and compete with others – or yourself – in a friendly way.
World Of Eric Carle: Rooster Is Off To See The World/ready To Read Level 1 (paperback)
As a writer, I must have a good knowledge of my mother tongue and vocabulary that speaks well and effectively to me. But it took me 13 guesses and two minutes to get a word that, at best, was a trip to first grade on the spelling test. Meanwhile, someone with a bear emoji in their name scored it with four guesses in 10 seconds. Note to self: Don’t let your day – ugh. The world has become completely literal in the last few months. By now you’re either a dedicated daily gamer or doing your best to ignore the yellow and green boxes that fill your social media feed every day. As a self-professed word nerd, I’m a fan. Word games are my jam, and Wordle is just challenging enough to be fun without being too taxing. It’s a little exercise that gets my brain moving over my morning coffee and a fun little group effort to share with my fellow humans.
But we can’t just be satisfied with our sweet little word game, right? Of course not. Why give up a good thing when we can beat ourselves up with something else?
Friends, let me introduce you to Quordle. You’re either going to love me or hate me for it—I’m still not sure how I feel about myself being swept up in it. It’s awesome and scary and I can’t stop playing.
Quordle, as you might guess from the name, means four words. But you guess with one word at a time. You get nine tries to guess all four words correctly.
Do Two Unpublished Books Make You A Failed Author? No, You’re A Quitter
First of all, there are two ways to play the game. There is the Daily Quardle, which is the same four words for everyone, one game per day, just like Wordle.
But there’s also Practice Quordle, which basically just means you can play as much as you want. dangerous
I’ll show you an exercise so I don’t spoil anything. Here’s what to do as you begin the exercise phase:
As you can see, there are four “quadrants” where words are entered. The only thing that stinks is that you can’t really see all the rows at once. There are a lot of empty rows for the bottom two words that you have to scroll to see, but it’s not really that big of a deal while you’re playing.
Good Morning, Love
Every word you enter in each round is thrown into all four squares. Then, just like in Wordle, the correct letters in the wrong places turn yellow and the correct letters in the right place turn green. Letters that are not used remain grayed out.
Here I have four projections (in two different images, because I had to scroll down to see the bottom two quadrants). As you can see, I correctly guessed TONIC for the top right word in the third guess and SLANT for the bottom left word in the fourth guess.
And as you can see, the keyboard shows which quadrant contains the letters you guessed, either in the wrong place (yellow) or the right place (green).
The main goal is to get all four words in nine tries or less, but the lower the numbers, the better. I did very well on this particular exercise, getting all four words in six guesses.
Motivational Wish Images
(Actually, this exercise was a bit of a relief after getting only three out of four words today. I had two possible choices for my ninth guess and chose the wrong one. Arg.)
Like Wordle, Quordle’s interface is very simple; There are no ads or anything extraneous. Also like Wordle, Quordle was created by a guy (his name is Freddie Meyer) who was playing Dordle (a two-word word challenge) with some friends in January. Another man in their group, David Meh, came up with the cover and completed Mayer. Now has a million players. (Mayer says on his website that he has no plans to monetize Quordle. Maybe he’ll sell it to the New York Times for seven figures like the Wordle guy, and if he does? Yeah, too much for him. power.)
That’s what humans do, right? Make beautiful things? Improve and innovate on what came before? Damages our brains and puts another brain in the best way? Yes, humanity.
So, fellow word nerds, give Quordle a try and see what you think. Again, you’re welcome and I’m sorry.
