It’s crazy how good this network is. That’s the kind of fun I’m looking for and hoping for on Friday. It’s so unusual to get so much grit and bounce from a Saturday. I like the Saturdays well, but they can feel a bit more difficult as the clue is deliberately tilted harder. Exhaustion can somewhat sap enthusiasm – otherwise I can’t see why Saturdays should be more boring than Fridays. They just feel that way. Usually. But not today, as I literally exclaimed “Wow” or some variation of “Wow” at least three times and rarely had that squinting, skeptical “really?” feeling. Also, I don’t think I flinched once. Too busy enjoying the longer fill that shines all over. I balked a bit at the ADULT SITE. I think I’m used to people just being more blunt and calling them PORN SITES. And “I WANT TO LOOK” sounds realistic, but only a little: I can hear “I WANT TO SEE!” much easier in my head. It’s really hard to say which phrase is more common, as Google searches show tons of hits for both, but that’s usually because they’ve found longer phrases that just start with “I WANNA…” It’s a little suspicious though that when I google “WANT TO WATCH” the top of the hit list is some NYTXW answer site. But I digress here: the puzzle is extremely enjoyable. It single-handedly raises the bar for pure enjoyment for Saturdays. Saturday is the new Friday! (But Friday is still Friday – never change, Friday!)

That’s about as nice a northwest corner as you’ll ever see. I thought it would be too easy to open. TRIX to XANADU was instant bam bam. Then I got a bit of a boost from a very useful crossword puzzle (thank you OOXTEPLERNON, God of Bad Short Fill™!), ie. ADEN, and ICED LATTE came soon after, but my first few passes in the above two Acrosses didn’t give it all away. Then I got the short Downs at the end (ADT LIT KEEPS) and saw TRASH TALK. “Ooh good,” I thought (before that I thought [Taking pictures before a game?] would have something to do with drinking). But then the beat really dropped when the last thing that came into focus there was RIDE-OR-DIE. Then I said “oh wow”. TRASH TALK + RIDE-OR-DIE + ICED LATTE — it’s not just a vibe, it’s a music video. It’s a goddamn rock opera. I’d be happy to stop right there. A perfect angle that unwound perfectly.

But it turns out there is more ADRENALINE that can be felt, along with ADRENALINE actually. When I put SEMS LEGIT out there, like with RIDE-OR-DIE, I thought “this is the crossword change I want to see in the world!” I also like that the ADRENALINE falls off the side of the grate and its clue is *about* falling, ie. diving (14D: Something dropped while skydiving). The third and final exclamation point came after I thought about LAS- on the 40D: A team game played in the dark; I had to struggle to keep going because I didn’t really know NOEL (I had NEIL there for a while) (52A: Name derived from Latin for “to be born”) and WOOLEN was hard too (probably the hardest clue in the puzzle for me) (47D: Warm, in a way). But somehow I got ORATES and then it got to “MEAN GIRLS” and then I looked back at the LAS- answer and with the “G” terminal in place I finally realized I was dealing with a LASER TAG which was another aha, which makes three actual AHAS in this puzzle, which actually makes me less angry than I normally would be with a weird plural like AHAS (21D: Mental Sparks). I thought I might have a harder time of things in SW since I had to get back into it (from the back ends of Acrosses) but -OP gave me ALCOPOP and that first “O” led me to OTTO and all angle dropped even though I’d never heard of MARIO PARTY (which was extremely hard to deduce – I guessed the MARIO part even before I knew the clue was a cross-reference to LUIGI). It started with TRIX, ended with MIC, which is fitting since this puzzle was very colorful (like TRIX) and it’s kind of a MIC drop in general. Good luck future Sabbatarians! More of this vibe please.
