Kurt Cobain Letters To Frances – For a class on abnormal psychology, I took about a decade ago, I had an assignment that helped explain a situation in my family and finally helped me make peace with it. I had to make a mental diagnosis on a public figure known to have a mental disorder using the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5). However, further investigation reveals the tragic circumstances leading to his suicide and the story of an extraordinary individual who quickly succumbed to his unbearable pain (4).

Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington to Don and Wendy Cobain. By most accounts, Kurt’s early life was happy and his family seemed like any other American family. However, he was a particularly hyperactive child who developed an interest in music early in life. Cobain’s life changed dramatically in 1975 when his parents divorced when he was eight years old. His mother recalled how he took the divorce very seriously and became increasingly withdrawn and defiant. In a 1993 interview, he described his anguish over the divorce: “For some reason I felt ashamed. I was ashamed of my parents. Cobain’s adolescence became more difficult as his home and school life became increasingly toxic. At school, he was a social outcast who showed no interest in joining the general social scene and extracurricular activities. Although he had little interest in sports, he eventually joined the junior high wrestling team at his father’s insistence and excelled. His art courses were the only academic subjects he focused on, and he could often be found drawing in class, particularly figures related to embryology and human anatomy. Due to his poor status and befriending a gay student, he was often an easy target for bullies at school. He would often be accused of being gay because of the friendship, but he later admitted that he didn’t just “stir up homophobia” but that he liked it. Unfortunately, homophobia was particularly prevalent when the United States was experiencing the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, with infected individuals predominantly from the gay community (3).

According to an interview with Cobain’s cousin Beverly Cobain, suicide and alcohol abuse were common among Cobain’s members and often tore families apart: “Drugs ran rampant in the Cobain family. When I was growing up there was always alcohol and violence in our house. He often stays at a friend’s house and occasionally sneaks into his mother’s basement. He worked odd jobs and earned enough money to rent an apartment with a friend from June 1985. By late 1986, he was able to save enough money to live on his own in a rented house (3).
