My Sports Jersey Grad Cap Decoration Design uses layers of permanent vinyl for a quick, easy approach. This is a great way to decorate if it’s the night before the ceremony!

The rose design is more involved and uses layered glitter and foil cardstock to focus all the attention on you! This design is easy to customize with your own quote, graduation year or school colors. You can use different materials, but the flowers are so beautiful with a little sparkle!

Finally, my stars graduation cap topper is a real eye-catcher! I show you how to combine cardstock, plastic folders, vinyl and fairy lights to make this adorable decoration. Best of all, the entire topper can be removed from the cap and displayed in a shadow box. I show you how in my video!

Planning ahead will make the project easier to move forward with! First, make sure hat decorations are allowed and check the guidelines. Not all schools allow cap decoration. If not, you can make a topper to wear for photos!

My graduation cap ideas use a combination of 3D clear adhesive dots, craft glue, and transfer tapes, but you can adjust most of the steps to whatever supplies you have available.

These designs do not require a lot of tools. I found the brayer, weeding tool, spatula, and scraper useful for most steps. If you’re making a topper and find your tassel button is off center, I’ll show you a solution using scissors and hot glue.

Get Your Graduation Caps To Stand Out With Personality Driven Tips

Since you want to look your best, I recommend using a ruler or measuring tape to keep your decorations straight and aligned.

Now, about those tassel buttons. We find that – just like graduates – no two graduation caps are the same. Some are not square, some are curved, and many have buttons in the middle. For most graduation cap ideas, that’s fine! Just shift your design elements. That’s one of the great things about DIY projects!

But, if you want to make a topper, the hole should be like a tassel button. If yours doesn’t, follow my video to remove the button and reattach it when the topper is done. It’s so easy and looks good!

Making all three styles with my Cricut Maker 3 was a joy. You can also cut these designs on the original Maker or Explore series machines. If you stick to small vinyl or cardstock words, quotes and shapes, you can happily personalize your best graduation cap ideas too! The standard blade that comes with every machine will work fine, just follow my material settings in the tutorial. A standardgrip machine mat works for most materials – especially with painter’s tape for extra security – but in some cases you’ll want a stronger grip machine mat.
