I was looking for books in the children’s section at Landmark when I saw this. Maybe it was the cover that got me but when I read the synopsis I knew I had my gift. It is about the Universe, the Earth, plants, animals, people, money, languages and many other things in the world we live in. it’s pictures; They help you focus on your reading…

I think Faaiz is at an age where he asks what the world is like? Where are we from? Why do different people speak different languages, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a website to answer all these questions for kids :). But I wanted to share this book… This book is a collection of letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru to his 10-year-old daughter Indira. In addition to raising many questions, this book shows the beautiful meaning of letters! It’s an image that has been largely forgotten in the age of electronic mail. It also provides a personal side of Nehru and Indira Gandhi’s upbringing. I don’t know if Faaiz knows who Jawarhal Nehru or Indira Gandhi is; living in the US, I don’t know if he will read about them in school; but I am sure, being an Indian, one day he will know who they are and maybe after this book he will want to know who they are.

I read the book before giving the gift because I want to make sure she enjoys it. The letters go from the big bang – the beginning of the solar system, to the gradual evolution of life over millions of years; how man from the weakest animal became the master of all; the beginning of nations, trade, language, money and politics. For me, this book was a refresher on what I learned in the past in history classes and revisiting the many museums I’ve been to. I can think of ancient coins that I have seen in museums, used tools, Egyptian tombs and mummies… For 10 years, this book will open to new information portals. I think it will lead to questions, questioning and wonder.
