Letters from Iwo Jima (竟黄島からの手紙 , Iōjima Kara no Tegami) is a 2006 Japanese-language American war film directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood, starring Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya. The film depicts the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of Japanese soldiers and is a companion piece to Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers, which depicts the same battle from an American perspective; Both these films were shot back to back. Letters from Iwo Jima is almost entirely in Japanese, although it was produced by American companies DreamWorks Pictures, Malpaso Productions and Amblin Entertainment. After Flag of Our Fathers flopped at the box office, Paramount Pictures released the U.S. Distribution rights sold to Warner Bros. Pictures.
Cabin Talk: April 2018
In 1944, the scene at Iwo Jima changed. Private First Class Saigo and his platoon are digging a beach trench on the island. Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Tadamichi arrived at Kuribaya to take command of the army and immediately began inspecting the island’s defenses. He saves Saigo and his friend Kashiwara from being beaten by Captain Tanida for making ‘patriotic speeches’ and orders the men to tunnel underground defenses at Mount Suribachi. Kuribayashi and Lt. Col. Baron Takechi Nishi, a famous Olympic gold medalist show jumper, clash with some other officers who disagree with Kuribayashi’s defense in depth strategy: Kuribayashi believes the US will take the beaches quickly, and will have a good chance of holding out the mountain defenses.
Poor nutrition and unsanitary conditions take their toll; Many people die of dysentery, including Kashivara. Army started using caves. Kashiwara’s replacement, Superior Private Shimizu, arrived for duty. Saigo suspects that Shimizu is a Kempeitai spy sent to report on unscrupulous soldiers. Sixty-one years ago, US and Japanese forces met at Iwo Jima. Decades later, hundreds of letters have been recovered from the island’s soil. The letters provide the faces and voices of the men who fought there, as well as the extraordinary generals who led them. Japanese soldiers are sent to Iwo Jima knowing in all probability they will not return. Among them are Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), a baker who just wants to live to see the face of his newborn daughter; Baron Nishi (Tsuyoshi Ihara), an Olympic equestrian champion, known worldwide for his skill and his honor; Shimizu (Ryo Kase), a young ex-military policeman whose idealism has yet to be tested by battle; and Lieutenant Ito (Shido Nakamura), a hardened military man who accepts suicide rather than surrender. The defense is led by Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe), whose travels in America have revealed to him the desperate nature of war but also given him strategic insight into how to deal with the vast American armada spread across the Pacific. With little protection other than sheer willpower and the volcanic rock of the island itself, General Kuribayashi’s unprecedented strategy turned what was predicted to be a swift and bloody defeat into a 40-day battle of bravery and resourcefulness. About 7,000 American soldiers were killed at Iwo Jima; More than 20,000 Japanese troops were killed. The black sands of Iwo Jima are stained with their blood, but their sacrifice, their struggle, their courage and their compassion live on in the letters they sent home. From Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) comes the untold story of Japanese soldiers and their general defending the island of Iwo Jima against invading American forces.

They have been described as bookends or mirror images of each other – “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima” – two different approaches to the same World War II.
But this second picture is very different from the first, and such a rare, remarkable performance could have stood on its own.
Once More Into The Breach Seen, This Time, From The Other Side
Comparisons between films shot by director Clint Eastwood within a month or two and released within months of each other are inevitable. “Flags” was a cynical, skeptical, pointed view of the war from the American side, while “Letters” offered a pure, almost poetic vision through the eyes and language of the Japanese – an idealized depiction of duty and dying for one’s country.
But of course the ultimate point is that, despite an ocean, the men fighting and dying on both sides of the battle were not that different.
Iris Yamashita (with Paul Haggis, who wrote Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby” and co-wrote “Flags,” receiving a story credit) hints at this from the beginning of the script. Searching soldiers stumbled upon sacks of letters addressed to their mothers, wives, children, etc.
One of the most heartfelt writers is the man in charge: Lt. Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi, whose real-life letters inspired the film. Played with inimitable confidence by Ken Watanabe, Kuribayashi himself works like the character Eastwood made his on-screen career: efficient, dryly witty and undeniably in command.
Letters From Iwo Jima Srt
The men who fight under him come from backgrounds as diverse as the United States Army.
The famous Baron Niche (Tsuyoshi Ihara) is an equestrian champion at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. Shimizu (Ryo Kase), whose experience as a former military policeman makes everyone distrust him, until he learns the reason for his dismissal; and the humble Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), a baker whose wife has just given birth to a daughter at home, a baby he has yet to meet.
Brief flashbacks give us enough glimpses into their lives and establish them as a prism through which to view the war experience.
“Letters” does away with the long-standing portrayal of Japanese soldiers as completely cold and hard, and reveals these people’s fears and hopes.
The War Movie Buff: #4
It’s maybe a little long and the pacing can be a bit sluggish, but those are minor complaints about a film that’s otherwise a great achievement.
