If you’re exploring downtown KC, you should stop by Westside at 17th and Summit. Around the corner is this quaint store that houses an assortment of Kansas City’s best local brands. They also have unique vintage accessories and clothing so you never know what you might find!

This is where you want to go to find the perfect matchday outfit! It’s a one-stop shop that houses around 14 different local boutiques. Grab a KC tee, hat and earrings and head to Arrowhead! It is located in the Country Club Plaza and has a second location in the Town Center to open this fall.

Sideline Chic can be found at many area boutiques, including Pink Charming and Shananigans in Shawnee, Razzleberry in Overland Park, Eccentricity in Lawrence and The Porch Swing in Bonner Springs. The Kansas City spirit is unmatched!

The two women live and work in the Liberty area. They’re modeling and dressing up their T-shirts inspired by the Autumn Chiefs.

FREEDOM – Amy Hunter and LeAnn Cruce appreciate when baseball and football seasons collide. Clothing business that mainly sells t-shirts, Love Letters finds fans who both enjoy sports and look for clothes to wear to games and parties.

“This is a sweet spot,” Cruce said. “Over the past few years, we’ve really enjoyed making the Royals go to the World Series and the division playoffs. There’s been even greater overlap.”

Hunter grew up in Liberty and Cruce, not far from Gladstone. The two now live within the boundaries of Liberty Public Schools. They celebrated four years on the job in July and have been running the business full time since April 2016.

They were part of another brick-and-mortar store before they even had a website. The two own a store within a department store as part of the Painted Sofa in West Bottoms, Kansas City.

“It’s a wonderfully eclectic shopping experience in the West Bottoms,” Hunter said. “A place that attracts shoppers from everywhere and is accessible to everyone.”

Where To Find The Best Chiefs Gear

Of course, it was a different moment in late October 2016 that helped them expand their reach. Joanna Gaines from “Fixer Upper” came to the Greater Kansas City Home Show and wanted to wear a Kansas City jersey. The KC Burnout shirt, a baseball tee that says “KC” in a blue pale heart, fits the bill.

“This shirt sold out quickly,” Hunter said. “Our shirts are more geared towards women, but we also have them for men.”

Both women believe they are entering an exciting time with Love Letters becoming their sole business focus. However, both will immediately say that the job is secondary to being a mother. Cruce has two sons in elementary school and Hunter’s son just started kindergarten.

“LeAnn has a creative background and clothing is her thing,” Hunter said. “I was a retail buyer of 400 Hallmark stores, so together we are a complete person. We think very differently and he can persuade me to do anything.”

Cruce said their job has helped their family success. The mothers of the two women thought they would be fast friends and set them up on a “friend” date.

“And Freedom is at the center of everything,” he said. “Our friends, family and people at Liberty supported us. We are blessed with great support from mothers, teachers… at our children’s schools.”

Another backer came to another business owner named Nathan Halter from MoSports. Halter wanted some clothing that would appeal to women, and Hunter and Cruce had to buy pieces for Liberty and Liberty North based on some of their popular designs.

“Part of our expertise is that we are two women who know what women want to wear,” Cruce said. “We’re also making sure we’re looking for real women.”

Styles and shirts are evolving. Sometimes designs are deprecated. Others may be limited in number and sent by confidential mail.

“The T-shirt is now an outfit,” Cruce said. “The T-shirt is not a bedtime item, it is a versatile piece that can be dressed up.”

“I can take my kids to and from school,” Cruce said. “I am part of a fun, wonderful experience. Of course, we include our kids in packing boxes and shipping. Kids love to help out if we have deliveries nearby.”

“What Love Letters has given me is so much more than what I found in corporate America,” she said. “It’s trust too.”

“Many in the retail industry will tell you that the fourth quarter made up the bulk of their sales, but we built our own seasons for us,” Hunter said.

So, are Hunter and Cruce happy with their success so far? Sure. Have more desires to dress women in stylish and trendy sports shirts? Yes. Do they want to be part of the larger fabric of the community? Definitely. Just wait for the ride.
