Word of the Day: PALADINS (10D: Heroic Knights) – Paladins (or twelve peers) are twelve fictional legendary knights, leading members of the Court of Charlemagne in the 8th century. They first appear in the medieval (12th century) chanson de gestecycle in Matter of France, where they play a similar role to the Knights of the Round Table in the Arthurian romance. Paladin names vary by source, but there are always twelve (a number with Christian associations) headed by Roland (Orlando spelling in later Italian sources). The most influential performance by the paladins is The Song of Roland, written between 1050 and 1115, which tells the story of Roland’s heroic death at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. The legend is based on the historic Umayyad invasion of Gauland, followed by the March Spaniard conflict between the Frankish Empire and the emirate of Cordoba. The term paladinis from Old French, derived from the Latincomes palatinus (count palatine), a title given to closer monks. Paladins remained a popular subject in medieval French literature. The literature of the Italian Renaissance (15th and 16th centuries) introduced more fanciful elements into the legend, which later became a popular theme for operas in 16th and 17th century baroque music. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the term was reused outside of fiction for a small number of close military trustees serving national leaders. Contemporary images of paladins are often an individual vicious knight warrior or combat healer, influenced by the paladin character class that appeared in Dungeons & Dragonsin 1975. (wikipedia)

PLOT TWIST: I loved this one. SIDE NOTE: I DIDN’T LOVE ON SIDE NOTE. The more I look at it, the more likely it seems unfortunately (for me) but when I was solving it was the only answer I had the most problems with. I tried to parse it from the initial letters, and this is the problem: the initial letters seem foreign. If I use this phrase or hear this sentence, I feel it just comes in the form of “SIDE NOTE …” “HE” was ??? and then even after I had NOTE, I didn’t really understand it. Mr. DEEDS will definitely be there to the rescue (34D: Mr. Movie). I have three frowns in the margin of my puzzle next to ON (!) NOTE PAGE. Most of the remaining margins are filled with “good” and asterisks and “!!!”. and smiling faces. Oh looks like I have an arrow pointing from frowning faces to SOU … but SOU (extremely old school crossword puzzle) is extremely bearable when not part of an avalanche of crossword puzzles and is used on purpose and strategically to hold larger, more interesting pieces of the puzzle together (like here). I definitely got a good dose of this feeling that I am looking forward to on Fridays. I even got it with “?” clue, as 27D: One with common judgment? he sent me on the west side of the net, away from the AU-. And in the places I’ve been (a little) struggling, there was a payoff that made it worth it. I am thinking primarily of NE where I flipped “THIS IS A DATE” to the east side of the grid, filled a handful of 4-letter responses above it, and * still * couldn’t do any of those long Strikes Works. I was considering shooting IT’S A DATE because I wanted GALAHADS for PALADINS, I couldn’t figure out what word should come after DRAMA, and I had no idea what was going on with -AKETA- in 12D. But I hung there, realized that the complicated-sounding “file type” was just PDF (10A: file type used in paper-to-digital archiving) and was rewarded for being patient with both PALADINS (ah, numbers from The Matter of France ”in medieval literature * and * the D&D character class, I know them pretty well) and the FAKE TATTOO which is just fabulous. I mean, the answer is solid, but this tip was definitely fantastic (12D: “Mom” for a day). I really enjoyed it from start to finish, with very few bumps along the way.

Although … can I really say that I am “happy” with an answer like INFLUENCER. This is one of the worst ideas / concepts / phenomena that come to mind in the age of social media. It testifies to the unjustified and cultic power of youth, primarily in the service of brands (i.e. capitalism), so it both seems despicable and makes me saddened by youth. Each generation has its own idols, so there is nothing really new here, but somehow this idolization is felt … I don’t know, armed with modern social media platforms that can use it anew and exceptionally (for cash and / or spreading disinformation). The whole INFLUENCER thing is extremely consumerist… but again, youth culture has always been like that. I hate the INFLUENCER idea anyway, but as a * answer to a crossword puzzle *, I admit it is up to date and alive. I like that it is located under POOL NOODLE. It’s hard to look cool when you’re sitting underneath the POOL NOODLES. Are there KEY POOL INFLUENCERS? If they are, well, this is a YouTube channel I can check out.

I really loved PLOT TWIST, both in response and clue levels (1A: Maybe it was all a dream) – a very fun way to start a puzzle. I wanted LOFT to be a GARRET, but of course that didn’t fit (2D: maybe an artist pad). Then I thought “sketchbook,” which the clue probably told me to do. Other tips that confused me included the wonderful [Team Building?] Which is transparent… once you see the answer (ARENA). But before that… well, I really should have noticed that there is no dash in the clue (or a space between the words: it looks like the term for “team building” is often written as one word for “team building”). In any case, this is literally a building for the team. Surprised to be literal! I had “GET ME !?” before “GET IT?” (18A: “Catch my drift?”), Entirely due to “mine” in the clue. I was pleasantly surprised to find “SELA” from a really ridiculously large catalog of Mr. Richie’s pop hits. I wrote it down in my mind and then found out that yes, my memory was correct, that was the title of one of his songs. Is it better or worse than [Acting Division]? Who can say? I liked the tip in BOUT (51A: Round and round and over and over?) – today the hints were extremely accurate. I didn’t like a tip about Richard PRYOR, which means I would love a tip that wouldn’t make him addicted. If you need your tip to be nervous, you know he has a lot about race, including a really great part about cops killing blacks with impunity … But at least that cocaine is his own joke about himself, not a public general or comedian hack using him as a cheap punch line and a punching bag (as they have been doing for many years). And that’s a good line. And I always like to see his name. So even that answer didn’t depress me. I’m going now PIPE DOWN. Bye. Chapter 3 Glossary (answer 21 is the first letter of each word.)
