Lots of vibes for this puzzle. First, the annoyance that WILLIAM MASSEY was on the net without the goddamn “H”, what the hell? Then the relief of discovering with ALFRED NEIMAN that the missing initial was actually a bit of a puzzle. Then the thrill of wondering what those missing initials might spell and who the discoverer might be. Then (and mostly finally) the disappointment of finding the opening phrase so dull and bureaucratic and ever so slightly … off. I think part of the reason my brain resists this revealer is the fact that “original” also means “coming first,” which of course none of the “initials” do. I admit it’s not entirely fair—my brain refuses to let things just mean what they mean. But when I look at this detector, all I can do is imagine a completely different subject that for some reason is missing the *initials* H, E, R, E. Mostly, the detector just doesn’t lock in because it’s inherently boring (as filing documents is initially boring), and because it doesn’t quite accurately describe what’s going on, at least not perfectly, pointlessly. I understand what the discoverer wants me to think, but since HERE is an INITIAL and not the (nonsensical) INITIAL HERE, you have to duplicate and repeat the phrase to make sense: Missing initial “H” Missing initial “E” etc. So there is a very clever idea in here somewhere (to write something with the middle initials of famous people/speakers), but the idea is only realized here.

A bigger, much bigger problem is the fill, which is always poor despite the two pairs of cheat squares (these are the black squares that don’t change the number of answers, they’re just added to the grid to make it easier to fill – see the black squares behind STAR and CARB today , before CLAY and ROMP ). It’s a pretty dense topic, so I give the puzzle some leeway when it comes to shorter spam, but there’s a lot of it. Fraudster’s Squares
