Florida treasure hunters have found $4.5 million worth of Spanish gold coins 300 years after a ship sank in a storm en route from Havana to Spain.
Old Spanish Coin 4 Letters
The 350 coins found on July 30 include nine rare pieces, known as the Royal Eight Escudos, which were delivered to the King of Spain, according to Brent Brisbane. His company, 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels, owns the right to destroy.

There were only 20 such coins in existence before the nine royalties were returned, Brisbane said.
“The gold looks like it fell in the water yesterday,” said William Bartlett, 51.
Bartlett was part of a three-man crew aboard the Brisbane-based vessel S/V Capitana when they found the coins in shallow water off Vero Beach, Florida. The search site was chosen because it was close to a previous discovery.
On this same day in 1715, a storm tossed 11 treasure-laden Spanish galleons off the east coast of Florida, sinking them in the early hours of the morning. Today, the ruins lie over a wide area.

The coins found by Bartlett are part of a now scattered hoard transported by Gallon, which has since been broken up.

Bartlett said the crew used the boat’s propeller to drill a hole in the sandy sea floor to reach eight feet (2.4 meters) below the bed. The rescue operation lasted five days.
He said he did not find the treasure for the money, and did not say how much he would receive under the contract with 1715 Flat Queens Jewels.

Hunters like Bartlett usually work under contract with the company, which pays them a percentage of their finds after the state of Florida exercises its right to take 20%.
The company acquired legal custody of the sunken ship from the heirs of world-renowned treasure hunter Mel Fisher.
