Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.
Next to the crossword, a series of questions or hints will be displayed, referring to the different lines or rows of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question with the same number of letters as there are boxes in the row or row related to the puzzle.
Some of the words will share letters, so they will have to match each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.
The fantastic thing about crosswords is that they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword puzzle for adults, or just a few words for younger children.

Ny Times Crossword 4 May 22, Wednesday
Topic: ATTAR (67A: The Sufi poet thought he coined the proverb found at the beginning of 19-, 27-, 45- and 52-back) – the proverb is: “it / too / shall pass / shall pass”:
Word of the Day: ATTAR(67A) — Abū Ḥamīd bin Abū Bakr Ibrāhīm(c. 1145 – c. 1221; Persian: ابو حامد بن ابوبكر عبراهيم ), better known by his pen-names Farīd ud-Dīn( فرید الدین ) and ʿAṭṭār of Nishapur (Attar means apothecary), was a Persian poet, theoretician of Sufism, and hagiographer from Nishapur who had an immense and lasting influence on Persian poetry and Sufism. He wrote a collection of lyric poems and several long poems in the philosophical tradition of Islamic mysticism, as well as a prose work with biographies and sayings of famous Muslim mystics. Manṭiq-uṭ-Ṭayr (Conference of the Birds) and Ilahī-Nāma (Book of Divinity) and the Remembrance of the Saints are among his best known works. (Wikipedia)
Wow, that’s pretty gross. The proverb… so corny, so banal, I can’t imagine wanting to build a puzzle around it. I assumed it was from the Bible, so I guess I learned something, but it seems pretty sad to reduce the work of an important Sufi poet to this silly saying. Also, “thought he sank”? What the hell is that? He sank it or he didn’t. And he didn’t write In English, then… it’s all so weird. What’s really really weird is that ATTAR (as it says) wasn’t just an answer in Monday’s puzzle, but the answer: the revealer himself. I know damn well most of you have no idea who ATTAR is. Come on, Don’t lie. It’s fine. I took a mystical and erotic poetry class in college (where ATTAR was on the syllabus) and then went on to a Ph.D. program in medieval literature, where I read more Sufi poetry, and I *barely* knew who he was. Like, he’s a Shabbat answer, maybe. I Happy enough to see him, but yikes, on a Monday, it’s crazy. I feel sorry for ATTAR that his puzzle’s big release party reduces him to this nothing “proverb”. It’s just a theme of first words. Nothing conceptually interesting, nothing interesting In Revelation, just…nothing interesting. Well, ATTAR is certainly interesting. Oddly placed, on a Monday, but interesting. A little fun fact: ATTAR appeared 58 times in the Infested Age, and this is the first time he’s hinted at as a poet (the other times it’s Tami d [scented oil] or [petal perfume], something like that). The subjects themselves are fine as independent phrases. The first two are good, the second is just fine. Longer non-carriers also add some life to the grid, with PARTY BUS, ALL THAT, TRASH ART and “ROBOCOP” being the standouts.
ATTAR didn’t take this puzzle above average Monday difficulty (for me) but the eastern section certainly did. I wrote YEP instead of YES because the clue is passionate and slangy, dammit, so the answer should be slang, not the proper regular YES (30D: “You bet!”). That “P” held ASHTRAY, which I really needed for this eastern section, which…sigh, RAPCD? I tried to make MIXTAPE happen. Really just looking for anything that actually implies a “collection”. The “before” and “collection” part of this clue is really misleading. Also, I don’t think RAPCD is any more than ROCKCD or EMOCD or RANDBCD or whatever. Sounds dumb. Also, I have no idea who this Bruno is (33D: The Uncle “We Don’t Talk About Him” in Disney’s 2021 Encanto because I don’t watch kids’ movies or animated movies anymore if I can help it, so if it’s a BRUNO character Became a monday icon, I missed it. But that’s my problem, not the puzzle’s.
