Favorite filler: SHUT UP, I DON’T HAVE ALL DAY, The Stinky Eye, Mocktail, and TEA TOWEL. Current Mood: Annoyed by all the public restrooms that only have air dryers, when after washing your hands, tissues or paper towels help kill germs. Should I carry an ARBINA BAG with me everywhere I go?

Ahh, Patrick Berry’s weekend crossword. Such a great way to just dive into the weekend, whizzing through Berry’s other signature, impeccably clean, no-theme builds.

How To Make A Crossword Puzzle

This one featured a really strong 15 ANGELS AMERICA in the north and a slightly less exciting CANCED FOOD DRIVE in the south, though the latter was saved from being “Mexican” by the clue (“a charity effort involving raiding a pantry”). .

The long stacks of 11s just above/below those 15s are also very solid and impressive. In the Northwest we have CROP DUSTERS / HORROR NOVEL and in the South we have SEATTLEITES / TAX SHELTERS. Side story: I used to live in the Mississippi Delta surrounded by cornfields, so the Northwest really brought back memories; a bunch of teachers living in the middle of cornfields with no neighbors for miles often felt like something out of a horror novel and me and my housemates were constantly bombarded by CROP DUSTERS. Below is a photo taken from my Mississippi driveway. Anyway, this awesome puzzle! I didn’t know Seattle was called the Emerald City, so I spent an embarrassingly long time trying to fit MUNCHKINS into 11 letters in 52-A.

We also have some great long drops in the NW/SW with SAILOR COSTUMES/ACCEPTABLE and DIGITAL AGE/MOOD SETTING. The latter two had fantastic clues: “Computer time?” and “You won’t be satisfied for long” is both true and a bit of a misdirection! Did Disney ever explain why Donald Duck wears a sailor suit? I never understood that. Is he in the navy? Is he playing Sailor Moon? Does he just like boating? People want answers!

Another personal story that this puzzle revealed to me and I swear I finished: One year when my youngest brother was still in high school, my mom told him he had to read Chapter 6 of Beowulf before Thanksgiving dinner because he was assigned at recess. He spent the whole afternoon in his room reading, and at dinner she asked him what had happened in those six chapters. He replied, “I have no idea, something about GRENDEL,” and when we asked how he could not know what he had read, he replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, “Well, I didn’t. for understanding! and to this day he has not survived it. GRENDEL!

All in all, another practically flawless performance by Patrick Berry! After looking at both this and the NYT, I will say that I liked the NYT puzzle better today because it seemed more alive – nothing wrong with this puzzle, but Caitlin Reid’s puzzle had more personality and sparkle in my opinion. . Lots of stars around today!

We’re excited to have additional Incubator puzzles this month! Off to a strong start today with a great debut puzzle! Here are words consisting of a wordORword as a choice between words. For me, the best answer, both clue-wise and answer-wise, is DISCORDANCE [A choice between a recording and an event where you could hear it?].

Some fantastic mid to long filler. CANADA DRY and MINT JULEP going down the connecting grid areas were really strong. TEAM UP, NO VOTE and THIGPEN were also great additions. And I loved seeing JESSICA Jones in this puzzle.

Tip of the Day – GROW A COUPLE [This may be offensive to some cis men; for some transgender women, like the creator of this puzzle, it might be #goals].

I really enjoyed this puzzle – the final theme answer is so perfect. When I realized that the answers were missing the letters DIS, I jumped to the reveal and actually laughed when I realized that it DOES. Really perfect.

Overall, the mesh is very smooth. I’ve been trying to pick a favorite area of the puzzle, but it all works out beautifully, it’s hard to pick one.

Best clue goes to OVINE [Sheepish] – I love it when a clue/answer combination can drive me nuts. The most accurate clue is ON TIME [Unfortunately, unlike most subways].

I’m heartbroken about politics, confused and anxious about the looming pandemic and the lack of reliable information and vigilance, so maybe I just wasn’t in the mood to enjoy this puzzle. Maybe it’s not the puzzle’s fault that I didn’t find it particularly fun.

The theme is consistent and mostly solid, and a little lighter than I expect Friday puzzles to be.

What I didn’t know before doing this puzzle: There aren’t many movie, TV, or video game trivia in this puzzle, so I didn’t get anything.

THEME: Verbatim Clues… I think that’s it – you have to take thematic clues literally to understand the answers. So:

Word of the Day: Trey SONGZ (45D: Trey ___, R&B Artist, 2012 Top Album Chapter V) – Tremaine Aldon Neverson (born November 28, 1984), better known as Trey Songz, is an American singer-songwriter and an actor. . Kind of a twist on a kid’s menu type rebus (as opposed to a crossword type rebus where you have to write multiple letters in one box). Something plus something minus something blah blah blah = a certain message, only here the hint equations lead to a “normal” or typical answer hint. I’m guessing it’s going to be an April Fool’s Day puzzle, but it’s a Thursday and tricks are just what you’d expect from a Thursday, so if it’s April Fools, it’s not a great solution. Basically, it’s just a more severe form of trickery – what we’ve come to expect, only more so. And here’s the trick… it’s more “ah, I see what you did there” than “Wow”. I think a lot of people will need to explain the theme or parts of it, because the first answer to the theme is pretty obvious once you complete the DEV, but the other two, yeah, I didn’t understand what was going on there until the puzzle was completely finished. This is an important lesson in how valuable the *front* endings of words are: I could see Devout from DEV and Stepparents from STE/PBR , but I couldn’t do anything about ELF or MMI (since they form the end and middle of their keywords respectively) . Also “Inits”. is really, really hard to read as “In” + “it…” when you have no idea that’s something you’re supposed to do. You have to give space in your mind that you don’t have to do with others (I think the “.” at the end of “Inits” is a bit of a cheat, the “.” in itself isn’t, but we’ll just accept the cryptic rules that ignore punctuation). There is no internal consistency in the answers – you probably can
