Rae Dunn Letter Board Letters – I know I’m not the only one who likes the look and feel of Rae Dunn’s pottery. I’ve been interested in various mugs and other pieces for a while now, and I have a pen holder that says “Write.” Last weekend, I picked up these adorable pet food bowls for Flynn while shopping at Home Market. Seriously, how cute are these?

The lettering on these products is simple and minimalist, like the pot itself, which is a big part of its appeal. If you love style like I do, you might want to try incorporating something similar into your own wrist designs. In order to understand how Rae formed his tongue, we first need to look at the anatomy of a letter.

When we write, whether we are using a notebook or not, we have an invisible set of rules that we follow. The base is where the bottom of each of our letters sits. The height of the cap marks how far the tops of our capital letters go. The descending line is where letters like “p” or “j” run below the base. Finally, the x-marks where the lowercase letters stand and where we pass letters like “A,” “H,” etc.

We’ve already talked about how players sometimes write “rules” in order to break them on purpose. For example, in the popular Bounce Lettering style, we ignore the correct base and allow our letters to travel to different heights within a word.

To achieve a Rae Dunn inspired style, we have to break a different rule… x-height. Instead of turning letters like “A,” “E,” “H,” and “F” at the usual x-height, we’ll press the crossbar up to the top of the letter. The same goes for letters that have lines that touch or are connected at x height, such as “R,” “M,” “P,” and “B.” One exception to this is “W,” where we would use lower than normal x height instead. There is no need for the lowercase alphabet, because as you may have already noticed, Rae Dunn’s print only uses uppercase letters. However, if you want to try your hand at a smaller version, just break the rules in the same way and raise the x height.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can have fun mixing this style with some of your other favorites to create your own unique hand designs. Remember, part of the charm of this look is that it’s imperfect. The lines are not completely straight and are visible on the wrist. So, don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
