SUBJECTS: plural written as two singulars — regular phrases that contain letter strings that spell plurals irregularly (ie, not simple add-an-S plural); It is the future form of the active participle of the verb that is derived from the common noun bias. Therefore, there is a “DICE” in the COMEDIC EFFECT, but in the grid, instead of “DICE” you get a “DIE”. and then another “DIE” … and so on:

Word of the Day: MAHARISHI(43A: Title meaning “Great One”) — In ancient India, Maharishi is a Sanskrit word, written as “महर्षि” in the Devanagari language (formed from the prefix mahā- meaning “great ” and r̥ṣi meaning “seer” ), refers to members of the highest order of ancient Indian sages, known in India as “seers”, i.e. those who seek to understand and to experience (and therefore know) nature and its laws. I’m generally not a huge fan of grids, but the basic idea here is so cute that I didn’t mind. Simple but clever—singular verbs have two forms. Of course, this is not very interesting, because showing “dog” as DOG DOG or “road” as ROAD ROAD would not be a distinct change. But by making all the included plurals irregular, i.e. plurals that do not follow the most common add-an-S system, the division into two singulars is more dramatic. In fact, ELVES are the only ones with an “S” ending, and of course they have the V-back-to-F change. Others are very irregular non-S plural. The answers that appear to them are relatively straightforward and easy to understand, or at least easy to understand. Everything outside of the theme square included at this point is pretty straight forward. Since it’s Thursday, and I’m hoping for a trick, I’ve been skipping over those circled squares instead of diving right in. I circled them … crossed them (to make sure the cross was working properly; God knows what the circled square will do with Thursday’s answer). I got the theme of “twelve steps” when I realized that it included “elves”, but six (not five) round squares, and since I already had the first “EL-“, I thought but I had two ELFs. in my hands (not the “elves”). The COMEDIEDIEFFECT was the hardest for me because my brain was thinking “DEAD and DEAD = DEAD.” But it was sorted. The last two topics are completely transparent, but it was nice to know. The filling is very hard. A pleasant surprise, all in all.
P.S. I blocked APPARATS , probably because of his injuries (20A: Communist party system). However, I knew the word “apparatchik” but did not know that the most literal meaning was “member of the Communist apparatus.” Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other books since 1873. There are a lot of copies out there, and I’m a little surprised it was allowed to be published. Once you understand the basics of the topic, you can (and I did) quickly write the OFF part of the remaining topics and then draw the rest of the entry.
