“The lost form is a female helmeted brand that hopes to angst outside of e-commerce, with easy-to-use formulas.” Microbrand continues to offer reliable, yet intriguing, affordable mechanical watches. We recently reviewed the water dive watches and its customization because that part was quite impressive. Multiple case finishes, bezels, over two dozen watch options, with or without date, over 30 hand groups kept so you can order everything you want, right down to the color of the disc in the movement. I had left the impression. The story doesn’t end here, as the new watch has followed this rather cool design. It’s called Basecamp and here’s a review of this new watch.
She’s Come Undone By Wally Lamb
The water had been released in plain sight. The new Basecamp is a little more mobile. It is smaller and lighter in the first place, and through the customization options they can use the field watch or the diver, depending on the bezel (although I will still touch the latter below). In terms of options, it has a vintage military aesthetic that hearkens back to the 1950s and brands like Rolex. This is the third line in the discontinued portfolio, after the Urban and Aqua collections, and is the only offering that still maintains the brand’s identity. It’s also an excellent value proposition, sitting somewhere between the Seiko 5 and Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanics. Let’s take a closer look at the latest tool released on the watch.
Founded in 2014 by Michael Young, this emerging brand is all about keeping things fresh. Pre-built models are available for each line, but digging in with a significant, customizable list of options allows for a coin as unique as you. The young man was never impressed by well-known labels, believing that true luxury was in a tailor, whether it was a suit, furniture or a watch. Young has restored vintage Rolex watches before, so he also knows a thing or two about luxury horology. The company is based in Hong Kong and, unlike most microbrands, most operations are done in-house. Research and development, component manufacturing and assembly are completed within the brand’s facility, leaving behind little more than the crystals and movements installed. This in-house development and production function is more in line with Swiss and European brands, yet the price is surprisingly reasonable, especially for such a bespoke item.
The two previous collections, the Urbani/Mystique chronograph and Aqua Divers, are very distinct. The former uses a (hybrid) movement, while the latter uses the proven Seiko NH35A automatic. It runs the same Seiko as the Basecamp and while the customization options remain plentiful, like the new design itself, they are a bit more subdued. That’s a good thing as Water’s diverging options are almost overwhelming. Simplicity is the name of the game with Basecamp and I think they’ve found the right balance with their latest pieces. The watch is reviewed almost exactly as ordered, except for two minutes. As I recommended with Aqua, don’t rush when planning one online (and maybe several variants before committing to a plan).
The 316L stainless steel case is a comfortable 40mm in diameter and 15mm in height. It’s certainly not ultra-thin, but slimmer than its height suggests. This is down from the Aqua 43.5mm in diameter and 16 mm in height, and the weight is significantly reduced (the Aqua tank was hefty). The Basecamp is much more suitable for everyday use and can go from a backpacker to a hiking trail to a night on the town without missing a beat.
The Trojan Horse Affair Podcast
The updated part has a polished steel case, although either black PVD or gold is also available. Nice chamfer and top edges from lug to lug. The bidirectional bezel is a sterile black ring with one triangle (with light), although the standard “diver’s” bezel is also available (starting in May 2019). It turns silently and smoothly without ratcheting action and is both tight and precise. The case is rated for 50 meters of water resistance, making it a dubious choice as a true diver’s watch, but it has a reputation for being rated conservatively at 100 meters. The screw-stamped crown, like Aqua, is a smooth octagon and the crown does not keep around this time.
The crystal has a deep, 3mm shell, which contributes to the retro vibe, comprised of LEXAN Polycarbonate instead of sapphire (perhaps explaining the conservative water resistance rating). What exactly is LEXAN? Well, polycarbonate is a thermoplastic found in headlamps and motorcycle helmets with 250 times the impact strength of glass. I like the vintage look and feel, and the tall arch creates a cool distorted look in the corners, but I’m concerned about how it will hold up to potholes and scratches over time.
The exhibition screw caseback is made of sapphire and shows the Seiko automatic movement, and a personal image can be printed under the crystal. Classy and understated, the vintage Basecamp and crystal-encrusted cases were the party of the year.
There is only one combination of hands and dial, although customization options will be available in the coming weeks. What we have now is a matte black dial with vintage tan/brown indexes and large printed Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Tan Super-LumiNova includes the four numerals and main five-minute indexes, which glow in bright green. You can have your projects under 12 hours (up to three letters/numbers) with a few different font selections.
Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies By Michael Ausiello
The hour hand is a large orange triangle, the company proudly admits it was inspired by the Rolex Explorer II. It seems appropriate given Young’s relationship with Rolex. There is a light inside the triangle and the smallest hand, and the white lollipop second hand has a spot of light in its circle. The oblique date window sits between 4 and 5 o’clock, and the choice is either a black or white date disc.
The aforementioned Seiko NH35A runs the show automatically and is the only caliber made automatic, also capable of the Waters series. It has 24 jewels, 21 600vph (3Hz) beats with a power reserve of 40 hours. It includes shock resistance on the balance and half hour, minute, second and day functions. This is a well-proven manufacturer’s reliable, easy-to-operate and affordable alternative to off-the-shelf Swiss movements.
The estimated accuracy is within 20 to 40 seconds per day, although my watch averaged only 15 seconds fast per day for two weeks. It’s certainly not a chronometer, but it’s more than accurate enough for most people and generally comparable to an automatic ETA grade (accurate to within 30 seconds per day).
My part is a Cordura fit with a 20mm olive green NATO strap with a matte steel buckle and straps, and orange and black are also available specifically for Basecamp. If there’s one thing I don’t like about watches, it’s the strap – but that being said, I don’t like NATO straps in general. they are resistant and easily removed. DISC has a wide variety of 20mm straps available with just the right amount to choose from, so this really is a non-issue.

I’ve been lucky enough to wear watches from all three collections and the new Basecamp for sure.
