In Wordle, players try to find a five-letter word by guessing. After each guess, you will know which letters are in the correct place and which other letters are part of the word but are not placed correctly. Then you guess again, but be careful, you only have six guesses.

What Wordle gets very right is in its community. Everyone gets the same word every day, and those words come from a curated list. Players can share their scores with the coveted goal of quickly finding the right word.
Using the mathematical analysis of Wordle data, we share some tips that can help you win faster!
The list of words eligible for Wordle Word of the Day can be analyzed for patterns, including the most common letters in each position. For the purposes of our analysis, it is important that the list of words that match the Wordle Word of the Day is manually selected. A list of names can be found here. Here is a complete list of 5 letter words that you can use as guesses.
More than 15% of Wordle words of the day start with S. Only six other initial letters appear in more than 5% of Wordle words. In order of frequency, they are C, B, T, P, A, and F. These initials might seem quite surprising, but they are close to the order of common five-letter words.

In order of frequency, A, O, R, E, I, L, U, H appear in more than 5% of Wordle words as the second letter. After that there is a sharp decline.
Both the second and third positions are dominated by vowels. The following letters appear in more than 5% of Wordle words as the third letter: A, I, O, E, U, R, N in order of frequency.
The following letters appear as the fourth letter in more than 5% of Wordle words: E, N, S, A, L, I, R, C, T, O in order of frequency. By a wide margin, the most common fourth letter is E, which is the fourth letter in 1 in 7 Wordle words.
The last letter is the most interesting: E, Y, T, R, L, H, N, D all appear as the last letter in more than 5% of Wordle words. Compare this to the overall frequency of the last letter of five-letter words: S, E, Y, D, T, A, and R appear in more than 5% of the full set of five-letter words.

Tip alert! Names rarely end in S – it’s the 15th most popular last letter. Word names end in S less than 2% of the time, compared to 31% of the full set of five-letter words. This is the result of a Wordle list created by handpicking words, and the contrast is striking.

When you start a Wordle game, you have a blank page and can enter any five-letter word.
Imagine you have played your first word, CHAIR. The game responds by announcing that the letter H is correct AND correctly placed, while all the other letters that are guessed are not in the words at all. This is actually a big improvement: there are now only 33 possible target words, including STRENGTH, SHEEP and WHO. Which name would you play next?

Surprisingly, one of the best words to play next time is STOLE, the second letter of which is not an H. Playing STOLE, we can distinguish between GHOST and SHEEP and WHOSE, all of which will have different answers. In fact, when playing STOLE as a second guess,
In the case scenario, you have to choose between three possible words on the third try. (Okay, you could also play SWOLE with the same results.)
Than playing another common word, although it increases the chance of getting it right on the next try. One of the best options to keep H in place is TIE, but it’s important to understand that this is less useful than playing STOLE. Playing STOLE gives us information about the letter L that TIE doesn’t. The only advantage of playing TO is that it has a 1 in 33 chance of being the correct word, whereas STOLE does not.
Wordle’s “Hard Mode” is why it forces you to play H where it was found: it’s harder. This is especially true when 3 or 4 letters are inserted, but there are many possibilities for the last letters.

Tip alert! If you’re not playing hard mode, instead of guessing one letter at a time, choose a word that can’t be correct but tells you which of the many options to use next.
One of the interesting things about Wordle is that there is no single answer to this question. Some people always play the opening word, while others change it. Here are some suggestions.
The main indicator of the quality of a word in Wordle is the information obtained from it. Let’s say your first guess is KUZDU. Most of the time you won’t get any information except that K, U, D, and Z are not in the target’s name. This makes it a terrible choice, and it can be measured. On average, after playing KUDZU, you still have 870 words that could be correct. A better word would have a lower average number of remaining words.
Many of the best words are not common English words. Here are the top 10 options, along with the average number of words that remain in the decision group IF you choose it as the first word:

Sometimes your first guess is bad. But you can choose words that minimize the worst-case scenario. These words narrow things down to the smallest possible remaining choice. These are especially good choices in Absurdle, a controversial version of Wordle where the target word can change but still match the selections made.
Here are the top 10 options in terms of the lowest possible maximum number of remaining words:
The first five are all anagrams, with none of the letters at their worst. 93% of Wordle words contain at least one of the letters R, A, I, S or E.
Earning a green letter (right letter, right position) is very helpful in the first turn. Here are the top 10 green letters, ranked by average number of green letters found:

While these words can help, they usually contain repeated letters and, if noticed, usually don’t narrow down the options.
Although it has been proven that any Wordle can be won in 5 guesses or less, it is prestigious to win faster! One measure is how likely it is that a guess can narrow down the options to less than 10 remaining options. For example, if you choose RAISE and find that the R, S, E are in the right places and the I is correct but in the wrong place, you immediately know that the correct word is RINSE.
Here are the top 10 options to help you narrow things down to less than 10 options in one go.
One last tip alert! There’s a lot to think about here, but keep in mind that the best first names always use five distinct letters and multiple vowels. After the first word, note what the options are and find the word that differentiates the remaining options. And if you’re stuck, use the word list to see what your options are.
