As a pioneer in the world of single-barrel bourbon, Blanton’s knows something about marketing itself. Namely, those little metal horse stoppers (although Blanton’s Gold stoppers are, of course, gold) that are on top of every bottle of the brand make it stand out from bourbon on liquor store shelves. But what do they mean, and what is the purpose of these memorabilia?

Blanton’s horses are essentially collectibles. Since the company was founded in 1984, a horse and a mounted rider have appeared on each stopper. In 1993, these models were updated to include more detail.

Tokyo Bourbon Bible: Blanton’s Label History

The official campaign didn’t begin until 1999. Blanton’s, owned by Buffalo Trace Distillery and the Sazerac Company, created eight separate horse and jockey stoppers that now appear on bottles at random. Each plug has the letter “B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S” circled in the lower left corner. These are displayed upon purchase, although some customers claim that some letters are harder to find than others. Still, Blanton’s assures fans that it produces the same amount of each each year.

“Eight corks are equal,” Buffalo Trace Distillery PR and Events Manager Amy Preske told The Bourbon Babe in 2012. “They’re in random order when they’re put on. A lot of people think we just have to do ‘parts’ or whatever on certain days, but that’s not true, it’s just a coincidence.”

However, anyone who wants to collect all the letters should be careful about certain details. Since there are two N’s in the name, the other is found in the colon next to it. Another way to ensure that the collection is complete is to identify the position of the horse and rider with a stop. The Kentucky distiller created these crushers with Derby Days and local heritage in mind, each one “reminiscent of the stages of a horse race” — including the trot, canter and canter. The final stopper – “S” – shows the jockey’s fist in the air celebrating a winning race.

The desire to collect the entire set has kept Blanton fans searching for new bottles for the past two decades. Reddit has threads about finding new letters and used wholesalers offering complete collections for $3,999.

The metal stoppers can be found on the 375 and 750 milliliter bottles of Blanton’s classic spirits: Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon, Blanton’s Gold and Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel. Those who complete the set can send it to Buffalo Trace Distillery and have the collection installed for free in the barrel wood used in the bourbon aging process. The company also sells complete sets of stoppers for $55, because let’s be honest, collecting all the letters can feel like playing the lottery.
