Lewis recognizes the danger that war poses to the individual soul. And he’s discussing it at a time of fierce rhetoric and virulent opinion, arguably the most turbulent time in UK history. Given the current world situation, this exhortation is as relevant today as it was over 70 years ago.

Habits are extremely important. They are also frustrating. Experts say it generally takes two to three months to establish a habit; it only takes two consecutive days to start breaking the habit. The devil understands this well. So his strategy is to gently nudge us in the wrong direction. He knows that if we really saw where we were going, we would turn right back. So he gently leads us in the wrong direction, knowing that momentum is a difficult thing to change.

He constantly feeds us the word, “This time it won’t matter.” He encourages us to think, “This day won’t count” or “I’ll start tomorrow.” Soon, one time becomes two, two becomes three, and before we know it, the habit is established. One day turns into two and before we know it, a week has passed. Once that week is over, it’s so difficult to shift the momentum back in the right direction.

Aristotle put it this way: “We are what we repeatedly do. Therefore, excellence is not an act, but a habit.” Developing good habits and being vigilant about maintaining those habits will lead to a life of excellence.

Courage Is Not Simply One Of The Virtues But The Form Of Every Virtue At The Testing Point, Which Means At The Point Of Highest Reality

Some reading this have a bad habit they’ve been trying to break for a long time. While good habits apparently take a long time to develop, bad habits are annoyingly stubborn. Remember, though, experts say that two days in a row of doing nothing and the habit starts to wear off. The old saying is “one day at a time”. I tell you, not one day, but two. Don’t do anything for two days in a row. You’ll notice that the bad habit has less of a hold on you—not that it’s completely gone, but it’s weakening. Then reuse for two more days. Soon the habit will be broken.

Also try to start developing good habits. You know what they are. Set your sights on just two consecutive days, set your goal for two more days. Before long, you will have established a good habit. And, give yourself grace if you fail. Never think you can’t do it. Just take the next step right… and then take one more.

In the end, you don’t have to do it alone. In fact, we often can’t do it alone, no matter how hard we try. His grace is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). He will help you and give you strength. And other people can be very helpful in holding you accountable and encouraging you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

The devil will gradually try to change you in the wrong direction. That’s why this very day matters. Take a stand and do what’s right. Change directions and change momentum. James said this: “Stay strong against the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7.
