Easy Christmas Songs To Play On The Piano

How many times is the motif “fa mi-fa re” heard in the first part of the song? Or, perhaps, how many of the same meters are repeated?

Find four instruments that sound like a bell, share them with four children, and play like this: (don’t forget to sing this time!)

For the first 4 meters, play the first note (eg a small bell) on the first beat of each meter (4 times).

In the next 4 meters, in the same way, add a second sound (eg a triangle), while the previous one continues to play.

Easy Christmas Piano Songs

The first version keeps everything nice and simple. The left hand is limited to one note and a few spaces.

The middle version of the carol bells add in additional elements, such as 3rds when the ostinato moves up, and some 16th notes in the chorus. Add more spice to the song!

I chose to arrange the Carol of Bells in the key of A minor. This makes it easier for those new to the piano, because the Child has no sharps or flats on it.

The overall structure of the song is simple. It begins with a repeating pattern in the right hand that continues for a few measures. (This is known as ostinato). This pattern will eventually rise to higher notes, and then connect to flowing chords and scales.

For the simple version, I tried to keep the left hand very simple. It has single notes or breaks throughout the song, so you won’t have to worry about moving around the band with both hands at the same time.

While the Ostinato repeats, nothing else happens there. But when we get to the “chorus” section there are clearly defined chords.

This is the way my father and I like to teach this piece – as a way to learn to improve. While sticking to the original music is fine, you can add different tempos, change the rhythm, or create new songs!

In this section the overall chord is E major. If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding an E major inversion in the left hand after playing the basic note.
