After being processed and registered by the Gestapo, the family was taken to the federal prison in Scheveningen. First, the female prisoners were separated from the men, and then Corrie was separated from her sisters. Corrie was eventually put in a cell with several other women. He went to a dirty cot where he managed to fall asleep sick, hungry and miserable.

The boredom and lack of stimulation in prison was unbearable. The women spent their days within the narrow walls of the cell, interrupted only by the handing out of meager and barely edible portions of food. At this time for Corrie ten Boom, prison letters were not available.

After speaking with her roommates, Corrie was dismayed that several women had been imprisoned in the dungeon for three years. As it was getting dark, Corrie tried to banish the thought of what had happened to the Jews in the hideout. He couldn’t bear to face the idea that they had been caught.

Two nights later, the guards called Corrie out of the cell. They pushed him deeper and deeper into the prison, and finally he was taken to a cell. There were no other prisoners with him. He was put in solitary confinement.

The conditions were even worse than in his first cell. The crib was revolting, and it was clear that someone had recently vomited. He wondered why he was put in solitary confinement. Did they know about the contraband that the nurse had smuggled in? Were the Jews found in the hiding place? How long would he be here?

The days became a monotonous hell. Entering Scheveningen the fever increased under these conditions. The only attention he received was from a doctor who promised to give him a mysterious medicine. In all of these interactions, Corrie asked her family, especially her father, to talk, but no one would share any information with her.

Corrie’s only source of comfort was a small window through which she could see a small patch of sky. Occasionally, when the wind blew just right, he could hear the sea. Gradually, his health returned, despite the cruel conditions and very inadequate medical care. The Gospels gave him the spiritual nourishment he needed, along with Corrie ten Boom’s prison letters.

In these dire circumstances, Corrie remembered the suffering of Christ. He remembered that Jesus also suffered loss and defeat, much worse than what he and his group and Bej suffered, but in the end he defeated and redeemed all mankind. He was comforted in this knowledge, and saw that his faith would be rewarded, for the love of Christ would conquer all.

Corrie kept track of time by using a makeshift knife (made from a corset pin she sharpened against the cement floor) to scratch a calendar on her cell wall. On April 15, 1944, a month after entering solitary confinement, Corrie turned 52.

Two days later, on April 17th, Corrie was taken to the shower room for her first bath in weeks. There, to his delight, were other women, brought for the same purpose. Although she had not seen her sisters, she was glad to experience the company of others for the first time in over a month. He decided that the next time he was taken out to shower, he would bring three of his four Gospels to share the love and glory of God with his fellow prisoners.

On April 20, 1944, Corrie heard her friends shouting up and down the cell blocks. This was unusual, as the guards would normally never have tolerated such blatant acts of disorder and insubordination. But, as he found out, it was Hitler’s birthday, which meant that most of the guards were out for a celebration.
