Crossword Solver 5 Letters
Using Prolog, a language based on propositional logic, we built a basic crossword solver that uses a simple natural language processor to understand simple clues.

There are two versions; the first one doesn’t take any clues into account. It treats the puzzle as a constrained problem, using the provided dictionary to provide all possible answers for a given board. The board is defined by hardcoding the length of each line and the intersection between words. The second uses triples and natural language processing to understand direct cues. For example, the clue “yellow fruit” will yield all words in the dictionary that have the color attribute yellow and have the attribute fruit. While this may yield multiple answers, it uses spaces and the length of the intersecting letters to determine the correct choice (although multiple answers are still possible, but much less likely than before).
Note that there are multiple solutions for the fruit crossword and our custom crossword. We’ve purposely added words to our thesaurus that will allow these puzzles to have multiple answers. In a crossword puzzle, length and intersections are not enough to unambiguously solve the puzzle.
To solve this problem, we created another program, cw_with_clues.pl, which parses the language in an attempt to prune the domain of possible crossword solutions.

How To Make A Crossword Puzzle
Crosswords are excellent brain teasers. The simple take a few minutes, while the most complex can take days. It’s a great way to learn new things and one of the most popular word puzzles in the world. As it turns out, we sometimes bite more than we chew. When you’re completely stumped, there are actually plenty of apps and websites that can help. Here are the best crossword solvers for Android, iPhone, iPad, and the web. You should be able to solve these crosswords easily with these.
Of course, we also recommend something like Google Assistant or Google Search (Google Play), because of the fact that you can Google a lot of crossword questions and get an answer or something close to it.
There are dozens of websites and apps for this. However, the vast majority are fairly simple. The best include modern references, maybe even pop culture solutions and the usual stuff. Every app and website on this list can do a few basic things, and at least a few extras. Also, all the crossword solvers on this list are either free, free with ads, or single premium. No subscriptions here!
Given how much information can change, and how many new crosswords have new solutions each week, it’s impossible to keep up with everything. However, most of these apps should handle most leads.
Crossword Solver Quick Solve
For the iOS portion of this list, all apps should run on iOS and iPad unless otherwise noted.
The Anagram Solver does two different things. It solves anagrams and also helps with crosswords. It supports blank spots, so you can look up almost any word, as long as you know at least part of it. Additionally, the app has word definitions, various tips and tricks, and some additional features. This is a relatively simple application that can be used as both an anagram solver and a crossword solver.
Crossword Clue Solver can help solve crossword puzzles in two different ways. The first is to search through clues. You just need to enter clues to get some ideas. Another way is similar to how most of these crossword solvers work. You just enter letters you know and periods of letters you don’t, and the app guesses the word from there. It uses an online database, so there is no offline support. Otherwise, the app is free and ad-supported.
Crossword Solver is an unimaginative name, but it seems to work well. The app has less than 200,000 proper nouns and every word in the dictionary. This should help find more stuff than usual. Additionally, there are various filters to reduce the list of possibilities, five puzzle-solving modes, and even some foreign language words. The UI looks old, but it’s easy to use. The pro version of this app seems to be a lot better than the free version, so keep that in mind if you try the free version first.
Crossword Solver: Enter Crossword Clues & Find Answers
LithiumApps’ crossword solver is one of the newer crossword solvers on the list. It has a pretty decent feature set, including over 400,000 words, offline support, and an anagram solver on top of the crossword solver function. Also, if you need these things, you can find word definitions and audio pronunciations. The UI is simple enough, even if it doesn’t look overly impressive. It also supports blank or unknown letters. Most of its features are available offline, but you’ll need to look up definitions on the Internet.
Crossword Solver King is another more competent crossword solver. It comes with over 280,000 words available offline. Plus, it supports missing letters, solves anagrams, and has a bunch of filters to help narrow down your search. It also integrates with this English offline dictionary for more offline features. It worked fine in our tests and is actually the same developer as the Anagram Solver above. The pro version removes ads, reduces required permissions to zero, and more.
Across Lite Crosswords is an iPad app for crossword lovers. It has a very advanced solver as well as some actual crossword puzzles. There are various filters, blank letter support, and other tools to help you narrow it down as much as possible. Additionally, the app supports both left-handed and right-handed as well as some other neat features. You can use it as a solver, but the developers say it may not work with crosswords in non-Across Lite formats.
Anagram Solver is mainly used for solving anagrams and games like Words With Friends and Scrabble. However, one of the features includes a crossword solver along with a few. It has over 280,000 offline words, multi-word support, blank letter support and a bunch of filters to refine search results. Crossword solvers are mostly just extensions of crossword solvers, supporting more blank letters. Therefore, you may not be able to use it alone. Still, it’s fairly functional and relatively inexpensive.

Crossword & Anagram Solver isn’t the most unique name, but it’s an effective app. It works very similar to the Anagram Solver above. You type in your letters and spaces, and you get a bunch of potential word matches. The app also supports anagrams, iOS dark mode, and you can see the definitions of words right in the app. The anagram stuff requires a $1.99 in-app purchase, or you can get it with ads removed for $2.99. Like the Anagram Solver above, it’s a useful tool, but it may not find all the answers you might need.
Crossword Solver is a simple basic application. It was developed by Havoc, the same developer of the aforementioned Android app. So it has many of the same features. This includes over 200,000 proper nouns, places, movies, books, songs and other pop culture references. Plus, there are 150,000 synonyms, support for blank or missing letters, and it includes support for English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and, surprisingly, Latin. It doesn’t work with puzzle clues, but it helps you fill in the blanks with the best clues.
Crossword Clue Solver is one of the few iPhone and iPad crossword solvers that actually uses clues. You can enter partial clues to see various words and it will still search for words with missing letters like all other words. The user interface is clean and efficient, but that also means the app doesn’t have a ton of extra features. It gets the job done, though, and it’s free to download and use.
