What are long words anyway? Long u-words are a series of words that, when pronounced, produce a lengthened u-sound. But before you run away with this newfound knowledge, let me explain that the long u sound can vary. This means it’s possible to have two words that sound completely different and still both be considered long words.

If you want an example, all we have to do is go back to the beginning of this article. The words “music” and “fruit” are both long U-words. But while we can obviously hear the “u” sound in music, fruit is a whole different story. Keep that in mind, because we’ll cover it in more detail in the next section.

The time has finally come. We will now go through all the patterns that make up the spelling of a long u-word. Hold on because we have a few things to go through in this section.
