Word of the Day: Della Street(17A) – Della Streetis is a fictional defense attorney created by Perry Mason, author of a long-running series of novels, short stories, films, and radio and television programs by Earle Stanley Gardner. […] In Perry Mason’s first novel, The Case of the Velveteen Claus, written during the early days of the Great Depression, Della Street is revealed to be from a wealthy, or at least well-to-do, family. It disappeared in the stock market crash of 1929. Della was forced to find work as a secretary. In the year Back in the 1950s and 1960s when it was a television series, this didn’t mesh well with the age of the characters as it was portrayed at the time. According to the issue of The Caregiver Cat, she is about 15 years younger than Perry Mason. // In Gardner’s novels, there are several sexual tensions between Mason and Street, several glances, kisses, etc., and several marriage proposals, all of which Della rejects, as professional men’s wives did at the time. It’s not work. Therefore, she could not continue as a writer (and effective partner) and did not want to give up this aspect of her life. (Wikipedia)

Tricky Riddles With Answers

There is an embarrassing “healthy” in this puzzle. Like…I don’t know, it wants me to think of a pristine, tight-knit mid-century nuclear family that watches Dilla Street on TV and hopes their kid doesn’t grow up to be that good boy next door and whatnot, but my brain really does. He wants to fight this premise, so what I’m thinking is that Perry Mason stumbles into the house drunk in an empty house and calls out to Delaney, “Honey, I’m home,” because Perry never broke down. Too many times, so now Della is next door to her son and Perry is lost somewhere alone forever. My version is dark, but I’ll still take whatever central casting he has in mind for us here. Seriously, though, the puzzle has a very dated vibe in general, not only in the theme answers and theme concept, but also in the quality of the fill (STENOS and IDES and VIDI and NENE and APSO and etc etc). Also, I don’t think BOY NEXT OR sets up the last word well enough. That is, other homecoming locations (street, stairs, landing) are strongly framed by thematic response phrases, but the child next door is just like … there … neighbor … I’m watching you come home … plotting. God knows, what brought that boy on anyway!? Anyway, that door is just a door on the street where you live. Not closed enough by the theme answer.

I finished O’Neil and said, “Congratulations, you’re done!” A message from the software, so I checked the cross and corrected that last answer to O’Neil (53D:Baseball great buck), but that was still completely clear to me, so I scanned the grid for my mistake and it looks like it. Not to completely correct my very early and inexplicable fact on 1D: “Veni, ____, vici”:

I caught that one earlier “Oh, her name is *not* NELLA STREET!?” But apparently you forgot to change EDOL to IDOL, bro. Otherwise, not much happened for me between start and finish. Oh, I wrote ELENA instead of SONIA (43A: Justice Sotomayor) – my five-letter Supreme Court initials crossed with “A” wires. Thank goodness there is no ALITO today. I had a brief feeling of drawing a blank on PLASMA, since I honestly thought they were solid and gas and liquid (5A: alternative to solid, liquid, or gas). Do you teach children about science? Anyway, per Wikipedia: “Like gases, plasmas have no definite shape or size. Unlike gases, plasmas conduct electricity, generate magnetic fields and electric currents, and respond strongly to electromagnetic forces” (Wikipedia). Surprisingly (for a semi-scientifically literate person like me), I found no problem with ISOMER (67A: identical chemical compound). Surprisingly, for someone like me who does a lot of puzzles, the CIPHER didn’t come quickly enough (15A: Coded Message). But overall, it’s Monday, there’s so much lighter stuff floating around the grid that any little gripes are taken care of quickly.

The only interesting thing showing up in the puzzle today is the amazing “B” run where the down clues go to the bottom of the grid. See the synopsis in 50- 53-Down: [Baby buggy to Brits/Beauty and the Beast heroine/Baseball big buck]. I feel like it’s a sharp little wish for a response, as if someone is trying to see if we’ll notice. Well, I noticed, and all I have to say is respect. Take down your freak flag, you … fill it up, people. see you soon.

P.P.S. LOL I found this (57A: Element suggested by voice by NOPQ STUV …). It’s just a part of the alphabet with the “R” missing or “gone” so…Argon :/ A fundamental truth or idea that serves as the basis for a belief or behavior or chain of thought.
