That’s cute, although your sense of cute may vary depending on how much of a movie fan you are. If all the titles are familiar to you, like me, then it was pretty fun. I like to remember movies. But there are three problems with the implementation of the theme. One of those problems is probably my problem – I had no idea “SALEM’S LOT” was a *movie*. I don’t think “movie” is what most people think of when they see the title “SALEM’S LOT” (the famous novel by Stephen King). All other clue movies and answer movies in the puzzle are very familiar as movies; “SALEM’S LOT” seems… less so. “TRUE GRIT” was also famous first as a book (a very popular book by Charles Portis) but it was not the famous Stephen-King and the “TRUE GRIT” movies were both very popular. When I google “TRUE GRIT” a recent movie comes up, while when she googles “SALEM’S LOT” a King novel comes up. [Googling some more] Hey… hey, wait… wait a minute! “SALEM’S LOT” wasn’t a movie at all; it was a tv miniseries! Okay, my objection here was much bigger, I think. The topic is clearly movies. Miniseries are not movies. I see the movie has been renamed “SALEM’S LOT: The Movie” and is now being treated like a movie (supposed to be a vampire classic) but it aired on TV and is over three hours long and yes, this is not a movie like the other movies are movies. It just isn’t. The second problem with the topic is that “How was the West conquered” is not a question. Other topic and clue titles, whether they actually contain question marks or not, are read as questions. “How was the West won?” is the question. “How the West Was Conquered” is just a phrase. And finally, it seems that the puzzle would be a bit more elegant if they eliminated all the question words: Who what where when why how. But we only get five, which is fine, but it would be better if they were all different. Instead we get two “Where”. There are no “Why” movies? Because I *know* there is a movie “When”…

The fill on this one is clean and lively. I was a little surprised that veterans like Natan and Andy did the whole “let’s put our names in the grid” thing (LAST, ANDY). It looks pretty bush-league, but it doesn’t hurt the grid in any way, so I think it’s fine (though tbh POP / PAST > POL / LAST ). I didn’t really struggle anywhere. Just a bunch of little speed bumps. I didn’t know TESS Holliday. I forgot COLBY existed. I never eat (or see) it. I thought [Petulant’s response] was “CAN DO!”, then thought about it and decided it would have to be said *really* sarcastically to make it “CAN DO!” … then he realized it was “MAYBE!”. We get one of these [Step!] clues – this is how I think of all the clues that use familiar “it” phrases to outline an answer, where the answer is “it”, although in today’s case the “it” is “this” (29D: Load it up! => LAUNDRY ).The THREESOME hint is… pretty tame (33D: More than a pair), though not, I suppose, inaccurate. I had BEST before BOSS (66A: Best dog) and bad in my favorite answers of the day ICE BOX before ICE AGE (64A: What was cool after a long time?). That “was” took me back in time… but not far enough back. FYI: THREESOME is the name of a movie. ICE AGE , also a movie . TESS, the movie. TED, the movie. CATS, the movie. AMEN… well, actually, it’s a TV show. Something like “SALEM’S LOT.”

P.s. 41A: C.D. holders, perhaps (IRAS) is a financial matter – “C.D.” = certificate of deposit (IRA = individual retirement account, but you knew that) A short piece of rope or strap, one end of which is attached to a worker’s safety harness and the other to a fixed anchor point above the work area
