Fruit With 4 Letters
Eat five servings a day, now it’s just about getting 10 fruits and vegetables into your diet. Scientists say that this could prevent up to 7.8 million premature deaths worldwide.

But how can you make sure you get your 10 (about 800 grams of fruit and vegetables) a day? We asked them what they eat this amount. Here is a selection of responses.
Jenny Broomfield 27, from Oxfordshire – ‘Cooking from scratch. If you do this, it will allow you to pack vegetables.
It’s not a big deal at all. I started eating more greens after I joined Weight Watchers. You are allowed to eat as much fruit and vegetables as you want on this diet, it is not included in the daily points you should eat. That encouraged me to load up on everything veggie. I had 10 or more episodes a day (if not more). Now I don’t follow that plan to the letter, but I have developed good eating habits that have stayed with me. I lost over four and a half stone.
I buy a lot of vegetables and put them in my diet. I don’t think about it. For example, on Saturday night I had pasta with four peppers, huge pickles, mushrooms and onions and baked pasta without much pasta. That’s low calorie and five vegetables in one meal.

I still eat meat but now I have smaller portions. I also eat fruit, so I eat cherry tomatoes, satsumas, pineapples, things like that. My advice is to cook from scratch. If you do this, it will allow you to pack vegetables in every meal. Dishes like lasagna, shepherd’s pie, curries—even pizzas—can be loaded with delicious veggies. This is valuable because in addition to the added vitamins, you can consume fewer calories. Also, vegetables are very cheap, which is enough incentive.
I’m a vegetarian, but that doesn’t mean I only eat vegetables. Most of my diet is protein-heavy stuff like Quorn, tofu and other soy products. So getting vegetables into every meal can be a struggle. But having said that, I recently discovered an easy way to do this: homemade smoothies. I usually drink my lunch using a 600ml bottle. It may not look like much, but it’s surprisingly filling. Plus, it’s an easy way to get at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. If I’m still hungry in the afternoon, I have some fruits or seeds. The rest of my intake comes from other foods. I usually have an apple with my breakfast, and a good amount of leafy greens or broccoli with dinner.
People forget that a “portion” of fruits and vegetables is not a large amount. For example, 80 grams of banana is a pretty small banana. The same size blueberry is a small hand. You don’t have to hide the rest of the food. And best of all, it’s cheap.
I use this diet method for health reasons and also for weight management. Eating a good amount of vegetables with meals means you need less fat or carbohydrate-rich foods per plate to feel full. My favorites include soft bananas, blueberries, fresh baby spinach, cucumbers, strawberries, and strawberries. I mix it with boiled milk. The first time I make it, I judge the size of each piece by eye when I roughly weigh it.

It is good to introduce vegetables gradually. Try substituting them into recipes in place of things like potatoes. You will feel full, but healthy. At some point it will become second nature. Oh and buy a smoothie maker.
Rakin Chowdhury, 23, from Hull – ‘I say prepare as much of your food in advance as you can.’
I am committed to fitness and I try to prepare meals in advance, so I add a lot of vegetables. I consider fruit as a sweet food. After leaving a long-term relationship, I started eating more healthily a few years ago. Unhappy with my weight, I decided to change my diet and gym routine. It took a while to get the balance right as it could be expensive. If you get frozen fruits and vegetables, it is very cheap. Now it’s normal, I don’t think about it. When my office has McDonald’s Friday, I have a sandwich or porridge. It’s normal for me now.
If you can try to get more vegetables and fruits in your diet, I would say prepare your meals in advance. That’s what I do. I prepare all my meals for the week on Sunday. Also, if you are eating pasta, have a salad with it. Or eat an apple with breakfast. It’s as simple as that. Another way to get enough of the good stuff is to make smoothies. Ten classes a day seems like a lot, but it’s not. I feel good for him.

I have always eaten a lot of fruits and vegetables. On an average day I have bananas and blueberries in my porridge, apples or pears and nuts as a snack. Then lunch is a mixed colored salad, cherry tomatoes etc and a chicken breast or salmon salad. I will eat an apple later. In the afternoon I have some nuts and dried fruit (cranberries or maybe some strawberries in season). Then for dinner I eat meat and broccoli and carrots or cabbage and carrots, followed by sliced watermelon and oranges as a fruit salad. I will make that into 10 parts.
My weakness is cake and chocolate so my diet is sprinkled with extra spoons of peanut butter and honey.
I don’t believe in measurement. The fruit tends to come in a convenient food size ready-made (a pear, an apple, a banana, etc.). I just fill my plate with vegetables, it’s not rocket science.
If I have a bad day eating lots of bread, cakes and sweets, I feel mentally and physically awful. I still do it sometimes.

Fruits and vegetables are cheap so I don’t know why people don’t buy more. I am driven by my determination to stay active and healthy into my old age. My advice is don’t buy processed foods.
Tamraparni Dasu, 55, from New Jersey, USA – ‘Growing up, my diet was centered around vegetables.’
My mother was a great cook and coming from the Andhra region of India, we ate three to four-course meals, each with a different type of vegetable. Each celebration includes several courses. When I got married, I was introduced to a new dish from Palghat [a town in southern India]. And when none of the restaurants could match the quality of my mother and husband’s cooking, I was forced to kick myself and start experimenting with recipes.
Breakfast for me is usually chapati or toast with a side dish of vegetables, like roasted cauliflower. I eat almonds and fruit. I go crazy for a little fruit, sometimes I eat a whole bunch of grapes. Lunch is usually a big bowl of fruit and vegetables in a salad and then dinner is chapati or rice and maybe eggplant or another vegetable dish.

I feel healthy and energetic, and I attribute my good skin and hair to eating lots of fruits and vegetables. My advice is to always cook at home, buy fresh products every week (every day is hard for most of us with work shifts). We cook together as family and friends and it makes it more fun. There are many resources for vegetarian cooking that have exploded in the past decade. Variety is important, so improvise from as many cuisines as possible (Italian, Chinese, Mexican, all South Asian and East Asian). It’s okay to improvise and fail, brush off the burnt broccoli and move on.
Anonymous, from North Wales – ‘I add vegetables to add flavor but bulk and nutrients cheaply’.
I get 10 classes a day. I have to work on a tight budget but cooking is something I enjoy and take pride in. I cook our dinners myself, and while I enjoy experimenting with recipes, I usually cook regular things like spaghetti bologna or stew. I add a variety of vegetables to each meal both to add flavor but also to add bulk and nutrients on the cheap.
My Spaghetti Bolognese recipe, for example, includes chopped onion, garlic, red pepper, and tomato paste. Also, maybe to start with celery, carrots or a few mushrooms cut into onion sweat. I do the same with my meats and curries. I add a little bit of any vegetable on hand. no
