Leapfrog Leaping Letters Game – Little Z is not easy to shop for at Christmas time. Before the holidays, my mom asked me to research some gift ideas. While we were shopping, we came across the LeapFrog section of the play store. Little Z really wanted their My Pal Violet stuffed toy to go with their My Pal Scout. When we were there we noticed this game, LeapFrog Letter Factory Leaping Letters. This game is like a perfect game. Except for a variety of shapes, this game requires the player to arrange the letters of the alphabet. There is also a second part of the game, level 2 I believe. You instead are a card in the board indentation and start trying to create as many 3 letter words as possible. I like that the timer is so long. I mean the game is designed for kids between the ages of 3 and 6, so I appreciate that they actually have a chance to complete the task. How frustrating it would be if Little Z could never complete the game. However, I like that as they get older you can give them less and less time to complete the game.

I have to say, keep your receipt when buying LeapFrog Letter Factory Leaping Letters. The first one we got was colorless. We sat down to play it with Z and the board wouldn’t click. We got to the need to return it to the store for an exchange. The second works great, and we had no problems. However, I wanted to be completely transparent because I hate misleading my readers. I originally thought it was just a great game for fine motor skills and concentration. Z already knows his alphabet and the sounds of his letter. However, this week I realized that this game would be a perfect addition to the All About Spelling curriculum that I plan to use with Z in the future. One of the activities required is to learn how to arrange the alphabet. I think this game is a great start. Parents can talk to their children when they are looking to put the letter in place, “What comes before x?” or “What letter comes after V”. It’s a great tool to facilitate these kinds of conversations with kids, without them making them feel like they’re being tested. Check out my YouTube video review:

I feel like they have a lot of little chops and bobs but nothing really fun now that they’re much older. Inside the box is a Leaping Lettersgame board, 26 letters of the alphabet, a word building card, a word building list and a parent’s guide. When I first opened it up I spent some time trying to figure out where the batteries are when in fact this one doesn’t need batteries at all which is great! It is operated by a mechanical timer that acts as a game stopwatch.

Unlike all previous LeapFrog games that I have reviewed or used at home, this game does not contain any musical sounds. I thought I’d hate it and kids would hate it too, but it actually works really well. I filmed the first time we played LeapFrog Leaping Letters and you can really see how exciting the P2 is when you play it.

LeapFrog Leaping Letters is suitable for ages 3 to 6 although my 7 year old understands this game much better than P2. The objective of the game is that you have to put all the letters in their correct places before the time runs out and the board of converging letters ends. Letters jumped all over the place! You can adjust the difficulty level by just decreasing the timer which makes it more exciting.

Leaping Letters also comes with a word building card and a perfect checklist to help learn the basics of putting words together. Words consist of only three letters. We haven’t really explored this gameplay yet because P2 hasn’t recognized the alphabet yet. I feel the girls are definitely having a lot of fun as well as helping to improve their motor skills, matching and knowledge of the alphabet.
