Letters Before An Alias
Letters Before An Alias – After 45 years of extensive investigation, the FBI finally found D.B. Cooper is the mysterious man who hijacked a flight from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington on November 24, 1971. In one of the most daring and memorable crimes in aviation, he parachuted out of a Boeing 727 with a $200,000 ransom money, eluded capture and enchanted amateur detectives around the world.
In the years following the brazen act, the bureau eliminated all but two of the 1,000 suspects in the case. Key clues included the $5,800 ransom money found by a boy along the Columbia River in Washington state in 1980, and the sarcastic letters received by several US newspapers. In particular, the letters offered encouraging clues as to the identity of the man behind the pseudonym who escaped with $1.2 million today.

At least six letters—typed, handwritten, and made using ransom-style cut letters—was sent to several newspapers soon after the kidnapping, all claiming to be from Cooper. The FBI considered most of these to be hoaxes. But interestingly, they kept the last two letters from the public back to the 2000s, which may indicate that they took them much more seriously.

The first letter, signed “DB Cooper” and sent from Oakdale, California, to the Reno Evening Gazette, was received on November 29, 1971.
A second handwritten and signed letter “D.B. Cooper,” marked November 30, 1971, and was sent to the Province of Vancouver in British Columbia with the following message:

A fifth letter, signed “D.B. Cooper” and taunts, stamped on December 11, 1971 and
The FBI released its content after a special investigative team led by documentary filmmaker Thomas Colbert made a Freedom of Information Act request.
“Sirs, I knew from the beginning I wouldn’t be caught,” the letter read. “I didn’t rob the Northwest Orient because I thought it would be romantic, heroic, or any of the other euphemisms that seemed to be circumstantial. High stakes. I’m not a modern Robin Hood. Unfortunately I only have 14 months to live.

“My life has been filled with hatred, turmoil, hunger and more hate; this seemed like the fastest and most profitable way to get a few quick ounces of peace of mind. I don’t blame people for hating me for what I’ve done, or anyone wanting me to be caught and punished, though that could never happen. Some (but not all) things that work against the authorities:
“They can add or subtract from the compound hundreds of times and cannot provide an accurate explanation; and we both know I’ve already come and gone on several airline flights, and I’m not trapped in a dark town. I’m not a psychopathic (sic) killer either. In fact, I’ve never even gotten a speeding ticket.
Colbert’s team found codes that they deciphered as “I LT Robert W. Rackstraw” in the fifth and sixth letters, including the numbers “717171684*”. According to The Oregonian, Rackstraw, a Vietnam War veteran and former US paratrooper who died in 2019, refused and refused to demote himself as the infamous hijacker. The FBI investigated and cleared Rackstraw in the late 1970s.
And signed “A Rich Man” it reads: “This letter lets you know that I’m not very (sic) dead but really alive and just back from the Bahamas so your stupid soldiers out there can stop looking for me. That’s how stupid this government is. I like your writings about me but now they You can stop, D.B. Cooper isn’t real.

“I needed to do something with the experience my uncle taught me, so here I am, a very rich man. My uncle gave too much to the world fools and there is no work for me. I had to do this to quench my frustration. I want to log out of the system and I saw a way with good ole Unk. You know now. I travel the world and they’ll never find me because I’m smarter than the system’s butler cops and lame duck leaders. Now it’s Uncle’s turn to cry and pay one of their own some cash for a change. (And please tell the butler cops that D.B. Cooper is not my real name).”
Again, Colbert’s team says this letter was encoded as “I’m LT Robert W. Rackstraw, D.B. Cooper is not my real name” and “I want to get out of the system and I saw a way out by hijacking a jet plane.”
But Cooper’s identity – and the author or authors of the letters – officially remains a mystery. FBI spokesman Ayn Sandalo Dietrich told the Reno Gazette Journal in 2014 that the letters were sent to the FBI lab in Washington, DC for analysis, but nothing was found: “It was never proven whether the real hacker wrote the letters.”
