SAPPORO, JAPAN—Los Angeles Angels shortstop Shohei Ohtani said goodbye to fans of his former Japanese club on Monday as he left to join his new Major League Baseball team.

The star pitcher and hitter wore an Angel outfit to his news conference. He began with an introduction in English, saying: “It’s been a long time, we haven’t seen each other again. I am Shohei Ohtani. Welcome to my press conference. Please be happy.” The Sapporo Dome crowd burst into laughter and applause.

Scouts are more divided on Ohtani’s ability to consistently hit big swings. He hit .332 in 65 games with eight homers and 31 RBIs last season, at times displaying the record-setting style that drew prospective teams.

In 2016, Ohtani hit .322 with 22 home runs and 67 RBIs in 104 games. He was also 10-4 with a 1.86 ERA.

Ohtani will try to emulate an unusual career path, the first regular two-way player in years. He has drawn many, if unfair, comparisons to Pepe Ruth, who excelled as a runner and pitcher early in his Hall of Fame career.

The Angels plan to use Ohtani as both a shortstop and a pitcher, and the 23-year-old said Monday he’s confident he can succeed at both in a tougher environment.

Otani injured his elbow at the end of this past season. A medical report sent to all MLB clubs before Ohtani signed with the Angels revealed a Grade 1 collateral ligament tear and he received a platelet-rich-plasma injection in October, reported Yahoo.

The Angels said they are not worried and hope Ohtani will be ready for spring training.
