THEME: AIM SERIOUS … just kidding, it’s really “Toy Story” – popular toys of the past, to be received in CHRISTMAS 65A (65A: The day to play with new toys)
Word of the Day: COZY COUPE (48D) — Cozy Coupe is a red and yellow toy car manufactured and distributed by Little Tikes, an American manufacturer of children’s toys based in Hudson, Ohio. […] First sold in 1979 as one of the first plastic-plastic cars sold in the United States, it was named “the world’s best-selling car of the decade” by The New York Times in 1998. Honda Accord and Ford Taurus. By 1991, the Cozy Coupe was selling 500,000 units per year, making it the top-selling model in the United States, with 399,000 Concorde and 299,000 Taurus vehicles sold that year. What a puzzle to depress indistinctly. Again, I am amazed at what veteran builders can do with impunity. It must be nice. There is nothing here. It’s a bunch of old toys. The. The end “Toy Story” is a fortunately incorrect name, since only about these toys “stories” about the thinnest information, in the clues. And then the revealer is just… the birth of the Lord? And on top of all this, the saturation is weak all over the place. This puzzle could have been run 20 years ago, with almost no changes, and it was remarkable even then. This is comforting. It is an insult. I repeat: this is a list of popular toys. The revealer is a total blast. Satiety is bad. How much do you hate Christmas to publish this alone? I do not know. This is either the worst kind of cronyism or a strange editorial environment or both. Either way, yikes. The frame of reference is very old, and not just because the toys are old (although there are a lot of them). The squealing quatness of the filling does not help. APEDOM? IRENIC? “ETTA KETT”? Then there’s awkward stuff like AT STORES (we say “at stores”) and at risk (the “A” was giving me fits, ugh. Also, who cares who founded the Daily Investor’s Business, what is that even? O’NEIL is really good at world! Which of them should I choose! From trunk to stern, this puzzle is a pile of bad decisions. I love CHRISTMAS! I love toys! I’m sure I remember that about toys, but you know, run a feature in the Arts section if you want to do that. If you want to turn the idea “Toys for years …” into a crossword, you need a hook, an actual puzzle concept, something … well, something more than that.

What else can I say? Not much. The biggest “??????” by a long shot of the day was COZY COUP, which I heard for the first time today. It has never been heard. Always. I get that the wikipedia page told you the COZY COUPE is the best deal for the Taurus in the US, but I have to insist that as far as Iconic Sports goes, this one isn’t anywhere near the others on the list. Also, there is a prodigious phrase in the meaning: “Toys that sell more cars…”???? A joke… *is a coach. COZY COUPE is not a car for sale. It’s a bed. [Toy automobile that outold etc.], that will work. However, the non-iconic, bad sense, language sense lifted from wikipedia (yes, lazy sense). COZY COUPE is the main topic of the day. I didn’t know what IODATE was, but it sounded pretty typical to me (98A: a halogen-containing salt). Preposition “I hope” for “I am second” (101A: “my luck has to change at some point”). Balked / winced at the -AED ending SAMBAED , but I guess you gotta explain it this way (107A: “I’ve done Latin ballroom dancing). I’m gonna stop. Gonna go answer the question “WHERE ARE THE CATS AT?” (96D: take care of the butcher, I say). Gonna ask Santa a lot, he’ll worry much better this week. Take care.
