Word of the Day: PDAS(9D: Palms, eg, short) — [abbr. personal digital assistant] : a small portable device equipped with a microprocessor that is used especially for storing and organizing personal information (such as addresses and schedules) (merriam-webster.com)

I really hate it when I get the Saturday puzzle on Friday. I shouldn’t care as much as I do, I know, but I want the wind on Friday, and it’s stopped me everywhere. The only section I didn’t really struggle with was SE, but that was only after TRAMP was sorted (I had TROMP) and ONE changed to ANY (51A: All’s Companion) and I remembered what was what. There was the PIANOLA (38D: roll player) (growing up I only heard these called “player pianos”). Also, I’ve never heard MAMA DOS (54A: she’s the person in charge in the group, colloquially). I think that my mother, primarily young women, is attracted to an older (female) celebrity / artist / etc. I’ve seen it used for reference, but MAM DOS was new to me. The conclusion is easy, fortunately. Anyway, that was an *easy* angle on the puzzle.

Many of the answers were revealed in deliberately cunning, sometimes surprising ways. The definition of PDAS is a little nutty and oddly marked (9D: Palms, for example, briefly). I haven’t heard PDA refer to anything other than a public display of affection in a long, long time. It’s a term from the 90s. Everyone has a phone now. It refers to Palms that I believe are Palm Pilots (!?!?), and again, I never thought of that. And “Palms” is already “short”, so asking for something short to be short is strange again. I’m not fooled by this clue, but the spirit of the search here is … not great. Indeed, a. can be defined in a more current way and b. not a very good fill to begin with, so why would you get weird with it and draw attention to it? See also the definition of ZIP TIES, What in the World? One thing I know about gaffers, and I’d say the real thing anyone knows about gaffers, is that if they’re known to have anything, it’s *tape*. Gaffers are the head electricians in TV/movies. So … I think ZIP TIES are learning, I don’t know, wiring (?) … I had _TIES and I didn’t know what was going on there. And last night I finished reading Sidney Lumet’s book Making a Movie. It has a lot of technical information, nothing about gaffers with ZIP TIES. Again, I’m sure they do, but … I mostly associate them with the police or the terrorists who stormed the capitol on January 6th (I know at least one of those guys brought a stockpile of ZIP TIES with him. ).

The Practical Wisdom Of Leading With Narrative Intelligence

There was some good padding here, but not what I’m used to from these constructors. Maybe I just ignored some of it. Now that I’ve been in my professional life for over a year, I don’t like to think about Zoom. I probably liked ZOOM BOMB a year ago when the technology was new to me. Now it makes me tired. I didn’t know PLAY TEST, so by TEST I wrote in BETA TEST (which seems to be the correct answer) and then when I got ACELA BETA wrong, I decided to use the term ROAD TEST 🙁 Like they just used the term car by analogy. Sigh .SAD ENDING (that’s what I had at 21A: “Ouch…” SAD, SAD ).Isn’t [Winter Olympic Pairs Event] ice dancing??? ICE DANCE is a key term on wikipedia that says “sometimes ice dancing” is called; in my experience it’s just called “dancing on ice”, so it was difficult for me to parse this answer.

Also hard: ATROPOS (forgot about it, crosses weren’t very helpful); PAPER (such a simple word … but this concept did nothing for me) (38A: Scientific work); BUILT (first BURIED, then MUSCLE) (27D: Muscle); OFT (looking for something that conveys repetition much better than OFT) (39A: O’er and o’er); TINNY (Hd REEDY) (19A: Thin Tone); MOONY (became MOODY) (4D: preoccupied with romantic feelings); PRIMP (became PREEN) (9A: Husband). I struggled twice in the same section and then noticed a definition of a noun that I immediately knew but hadn’t bothered to look up before. It happened with Hannah ARENDT (3D: Hannah who wrote The Human Condition) and MALLRATS (12D: 1995 cult classic directed by Kevin Smith). Do you do this? Move around a corner only to realize you haven’t looked at all the help in that corner yet (stupid!)? I do this a lot, especially with longer details, because I have a habit of attacking the shorter stuff first (usually a good plan). Embarrassed that the “breakthrough” answer for me in the Northwest (where I struggled a lot) was AEROSMITH — I was on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coast (circa 2011). To this day, it’s still the only roller coaster I’ve ever been on with a hook (you try to hook right out of the gate while Steven Tyler blesses you). This description is exactly what I remember:
