THEME: NBA / JAM (38A: With 39-Across, classic sports video game … or a hint for four squares in this puzzle)— “NBA” is “JAM” in four squares in this puzzle:

Word of the day: Leopold AUER (40D: Violis Leopold) — Leopold von Auer (Hungarian: Auer Lipót; 7 June 1845 – 15 July 1930) was a Hungarian violinist, academic, conductor and composer, best known as an outstanding violin teacher . […] Auer is remembered as one of the most important pedagogues of the violin, and was one of the most sought-after teachers for gifted students. “Auer’s position in the history of violin playing is based on his teaching.” Many notable virtuoso violinists were among his students, including Mischa Elman, Konstanty Gorski, Jascha Heifetz, Nathan Milstein, Toscha Seidel, Efrem Zimbalist, Georges Boulanger, Benno Rabinof, Kathleen Parlow, Julia Klumpke, Thelma Given, Sylvia Lent, Kemp Stillings, and Oscar Shumsky. Among them were “some of the greatest violinists” of the twentieth century. (wikipedia)

Well, for a puzzle that started with the clue [Taradiddle] (i.e. with boring quirkiness), this one turned out well. The theme was really, really simple – simple conceptually, easy to uncover – but somehow it was still fun to discover all the “NBA” containing answers, which were BY FAR the most interesting things in the grid. To find out it was a rebus, went something like this. A. realizes that it is Thursday, which is the most likely rebus day of the week; B. Gets to [Regain, as affection], realizes it must be WIN-something, but there aren’t enough spaces for any answer to make sense; C. gets the “K” of THANKS (4D: Counterpart of “Bitte”), realizes the cross *must* WIN BACK ; D. sees that “NBA” (a meaningful entity) can fit into one square; E. make it fit. It’s probably a few letters too many, it all happened so quickly, but hopefully you can see how the rebus came into view. By far the most important solving step in that progression is A: if you don’t know how to look for rebuses, at least don’t have them on your radar, then a puzzle like this can obviously destroy you. But if you were aware of the possibility, then this one was very easy to see. I hit the revealer soon after, which told me that “NBA” would be the only letter sequence I’d be looking for (before that, I thought I might have to look up the initials of all four major American sports leagues). I knew what NBA JAM was, which was undoubtedly a huge advantage in solving this thing quickly. Very easy to discover, and repetitive in its expression (NBANBANBA etc.), and yet, as I say, those “NBA” answers are all quite delightful. While I like ANSWER CHAIR as an answer, it points out that I don’t break “NBA” over the two words in the answer (like all the other longer theme answers do – actually SUSAN B. ANTHONY breaks over *three* elements). But eight pleasant theme answers, no gimmick, that’s not bad.

My only displeasure today came in the editing / clue. Well, and AUER . AUER is a name I associate with many very old puzzles. It brings its own mustiness. I only know this because of crossword puzzles. The NYT once, over a decade ago, mistook Leopold for (actor) Mischa and let me tell you, it’s bad enough not knowing who the AUERs are. When the crossword puzzle can’t even keep them straight, it’s just depressing. Well, at least I’ve seen Mischa AUER in movies (My Man Godfrey is particularly special). You see LAILA, ENSLER, LES PAUL and ASNER, you think OK, I see your people all the time, but you’re famous enough that I can just wave and move on. Whereas with AUER I was very aware of knowing something (due to past crossword trauma) that a large percentage of the solving base just wouldn’t know. Not a great feeling. You’d think I’d throw my hands in the air in triumph, knowing a relatively obscure thing. But that’s not how my brain works. AUER and [Taradiddle] just gave me bad vibes. Musty puzzles from Yore vibes. Maybe you’re thinking, “your stupid bad vibes aren’t worth a SOU!” That does sound like something an AUER stan would say. But anyway, AUER had fair crosses though, so I/you probably shouldn’t complain too much.Bound for Oregon – Chapters 1-4 Vocabulary Crossword PDF Bound For Oregon – Chapters 1-4 Vocabulary Crossword Word Document
