THEME:hand jive— the meanings of a gestured hand, clued using ordinal numbers to describe what the various DIGITS do in each gesture (66A: What does each number represent in the star clues):

Word of the Day: VOCAL FRY(39D: Low, flying speech register) — The vocal fry register (also known as pulse register, laryngealization, pulse phonation, creak, croak, popcorning, glottal fry , glottal rattle, glottal scrape, or strohbass ) is the lowest vocal register and is produced by a loose glottal closure that allows air to pass slowly with a low-frequency popping or dripping sound a lot. During this phonation, the arytenoid cartilages in the larynx are brought together, which causes the vocal cords to compress quite tightly and become relatively loose and compact. This process forms a large, irregularly vibrating mass within the vocal folds that produces the characteristic low popping or dripping sound when air passes through the glottis closure. The register (if well controlled) can extend well below the modal voice register, in some cases up to 8 octaves lower, as in the case of Tim Storms who holds the world record for the lowest note of frequency ever produced by man, G − 7, which is only 0.189Hz, is inaudible to the human ear. The theme is good but to go through this felt like running a gauntlet of punishment, where lots and lots of tired fill just kinda shove you around and poke you in your ears and stuff. The problem started in 1-Across, to be honest (1A: Lab test) (ASSAY ). A good word, you might say, and, uh, OK, yes, it’s a word, but it’s a crossword, in the sense that I ever see it there, and I see it not often; and when words like that come together, yikes. And it’s not just the repeaters, it’s the rando stuff like ACTIV and the crossword place names like LHASA and LOIRE and then LAO ATOP ASEA PTA SARI GRU etc on full blast for the whole 15×15 experience. HORARE!? ICE!? Also, there is this slightly ultra annoying tendency towards Scrabble-f*cking, with the X’s and Z’s and multiple Ks shoved into the grid with either no good effect or very bad. None of these letters are giving you much bang for your buck, and the sections they’re in aren’t exactly pretty, so what’s going on? ACCOUNT ? Is your “K” worth that? Letters are not interesting—good filling is interesting. Clean grids are fun. That’s the direction you want to go. If you go in that direction, then people can focus on the theme you came up with, which is presumably where you want them to focus.

I’ve got allllllll green ink on my puzzle printout. Most of it is just marking the tiresome miles, but some if indicating trouble spots. I can never process a [Word that does this if you do this thing to it] kind of hint, so SHE (15A: A word that becomes its opposite if its first letter is removed), crosses “?” clue in ASH (6D: Result of dismissal?), crossing LHASA (which I wanted to be either LAPAZ or SUCRE), that whole area caused a bit of a slowdown. Also totally blanked on HORAE , a term I know because I teach classical literature sometimes but omg there are so many groups of goddesses and my brain apparently just can’t keep them all sorted (36D: Goddesses of the seasons). Went to ICEIN before FOGIN , of course (53D: Strand in an airport, maybe). I think it is for genuine attachment points. Except, no, I had problems with the FRY part of VOCAL FRY , a phenomenon that is somehow both a widespread scourge and something I’ve never heard of, or… possibly heard of but never quite understood. I thought it was just the rasp you get after yelling at, say, a concert or sporting event. It seems like a recent slangy coin that the simple word “registry” does not clue me.

I’ll close by showing disdain for 59A: Show disdain for, somehow (SPIT ON ), but I’m going to make fun of it because spitting in general is repulsive and spitting *on* someone is beyond pale Even as a metaphor, gross.
