Wow, that’s scary. Proverb… so three-dimensional, so restricted, I can’t imagine building a puzzle around it. I assumed it was from the Bible, so I guess I learned something, but it seems sad to reduce the work of an important Sufi poet to this cliché. Also, “thought to be invented”? What is hell? He created it or not. And he didn’t write in English, so… it was all very strange. What’s really strange is that ATTAR (as posted) is not just the answer in Monday’s puzzle, but the answer: the revealer himself. I know most people don’t know who ATTAR is. Come on now, don’t lie. ok I took a Mystical & Erotic poetry class in college (where ATTAR was in the curriculum), then moved on to a Ph.D. program in medieval literature, where I read mostly Sufi poetry, and *barely* knew who he was. Like, it’s Saturday’s answer, maybe. I’m glad to see him, but on Mondays, he’s nuts. I feel bad for ATTAR that his big puzzle gathering has reduced him to this “liberation” of nothingness. It’s just the first word. Nothing interesting conceptually, nothing interesting in the reveal, just…nothing interesting. Well, ATTAR is definitely interesting. Oddly placed, on a Monday, but interesting. A little fun fact: ATTAR appeared 58 times during Shortz’s tenure, the first time he was credited as a poet (other times he was always [perfume oil] or [perfume from rose petals], something like that). Themes themselves are like independent phrases. The first two are good, the second two are just fine. Even longer non-topics add some life to the web, PARTY BUS, All That, Trash and ROBOCOP stand out.

ATTAR didn’t put this puzzle above average Monday difficulty (but for me), but the Eastern section certainly did. I wrote YES instead of YEP because the clue is hot and heavy, dammit, so the answer isn’t a primitive general yes (30D: “You bet!”). He kept the “P” ASHTRAY, and I really needed that east section, which…ah, RAPCD? I’m trying to make a MIXTAPE. In fact, just look for things that suggest “hoarding”. The “past” and “collection” part of this clue is really confusing. I don’t think RAPCD is any more than ROCKCD or EMOCD or RANDBCD or whatever. It sounds old. Also, I have no idea who this BRUNO is (33D: the uncle from Disney’s 2021 movie Encanto, “We Don’t Talk”) because I don’t watch kids’ movies or cartoons anymore if I can help it. BRUNO’s character has become a Monday-character, and I miss him. But that’s my problem, not the puzzle.

The key word in this puzzle was kind of painful: TKO EAU OTOH ULNA TEC REA ELENA ECRU SOFTG ITALO YER PTA ITSY PEET IRA OBIT KARAT CHIA… Moderate, some of these answers are tolerable, but today was not moderate. BRB means “back to the right” in case of ambiguity (

33A: Texter’s “Catch this thought”). I won’t be back. Rather, I’ll see you tomorrow. good day A mushroom is not a complete organism per se, but rather a part of the fungus, as well as the fruiting body responsible for spreading reproductive spores. “Much Ado About Nothing” is a William Shakespeare play that is my favorite. It is a comedy about two lovers with many mistaken identities and double meanings. I saw him perform once at the amazing Globe Theater in London. Given that the practice in Shakespeare’s time was to use male actors, such a performance is somewhat ironic.
