One of the first questions any new player asks is, “Does Wordle repeat letters in its answers?” The answer, as they will soon learn, is “yes.” But, for your first few turns, including your second word in Wordle, you want to avoid trying those words. Statistically running a solid initial word doesn’t result in many greens or yellows. It asks a player “Now what? What word do I play next?”. Playing the two free opening words allows you to play 10 unique letters, resulting in a very good chance of finding greens and yellows right away.
Generally, it works: good word combos result in 3 or more yellows half the time, and at least one green 62% of the time. Compare this to the singularly popular opening word (carat), which results in 3 or more yellow only 10% of games, and green only 46% of the time! You can see that two strong initial words get you very close to the solution.

Steve Hodges wanted to know what the best word combos were. So he designed Startle to rank the two terms together. This choice of using two words allowed Steve to find what he believed to be, mathematically speaking, the best opening words in the Wordal.
Steve’s research at Startle shows that, as of May 2022, “coil” and “nighter” are statistically the best starting word pairs. Of course, this isn’t the only word pairing you can play. Here is a list of the word combinations that Startle considers to be the best.
Like the best Wordle first words, each pair of words also has scores for how likely you are to get a green or yellow square in the game. On average, each pair has a 64% chance of finding at least one green square and a 97% chance of finding at least one yellow square. All of these initial pairs contain A, E, I, and O. The letter U appears to be a less common vowel among the possible Wordle answers.
