In first grade, I use sound boxes both without letters for a few minutes before reading groups and when teaching spelling. Before letters are even introduced in kindergarten, you must use them without recording letters. Mastery with these skills will set your students up for success with reading and spelling. Students can use bingo chips to “push” one sound into each box as they orally segment a word.

In first grade, I created a Sound Box “journal” for my students each month. I used the spelling patterns we use in class. There are always some students who memorize spelling words, but we really want them to learn the phonetic patterns and develop strong phonological awareness. At the beginning of the year, most words only use 3 boxes but I have four available, so they still have to count the phonemes and determine the number of sounds in the words themselves. They just stumble out of the last box. After they sound out the word and write the letters in the boxes, they write a sentence with that word. They are expected to use the rules of writing that we have learned up to that point (at the beginning that is just capital letters, periods, spaces). Then I pass out colored pencils and we make sure that the words in the sound boxes are spelled correctly. That way I have a whole package of information to use when report cards come out. I can look back and see how well they sounded the words and I can also use their sentences as an assessment. Also, when I see a group of children (or even just one) struggling with sound boxes, I know I need to work with them more.

This is a great thing to keep in their portfolios as you will see great growth with both spelling and sentence writing.

An easy way to practice this skill is to use magnets on a white board. I always keep 4-5 different color circular magnets on my white board. Each magnet represents one sound.
