Words With The Letters Lemony – The three Baudelaires may be long gone, but there is a fourth Baudelaire here, waiting for you to untie “My Knot of Silence” and help me find the end of a story that began with you – in the very room I sit in now, I will pass this letter to my business letter writing instructor so he can grade it and mail it.

Béatrice Baudelaire II (also known as Béatrice Baudelaire and non-canonically as Beatrice) is Keith’s daughter, born during the End. She was ten years old when her last letter in The Letters of Beatrice was written.

Perhaps this last word was the baby’s first secret, joining the secrets Baudelaire kept from the baby and all the other secrets submerged in the world. Perhaps it is better not to know exactly what is meant by this word, as some things are better left in the great unknown. There are some words, of course, that are better left unsaid, but not, I believe, the word spoken by my niece, a word that here means the story is over. Beatrice.

Keith gave birth to Beatrice on the island; she dies as a result of medusoid mycelium poisoning and gives her daughter to Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire to raise. When Beatrice opened her eyes for the first time, she saw the sunrise and wept.

Named after Baudelaire’s late mother, she was raised by the Baudelaire family for a year on this island. Every time Beatrice woke up in the middle of the night, the children would put her on top of her bra and eat breakfast with her while staring out at the sea. Beatrice also developed her own ‘baby talk’ way of speaking that Sunny understood best.

She grew up very quickly, looked a lot like her mother and “eagerly explored the island at every opportunity”. Her guardians looked after her very well, despite everything on the island that could harm her, although she learned of the danger from the book that Baudelaire read aloud every night.

After about a year, the Baudelaires decided to leave the island as the coastal shelf flooded again, knowing they could not house her forever. While packing, Beatrice asks for a cake.

Violet once told me that I saved her life, and Klaus claimed that without me he would have died of despair not long after the destruction of the Denouement Hotel. Even Sunny said she couldn’t have survived without me. But I don’t need to tell you how brave and resourceful, how loyal and well-read these three people are. I am the one who would be lost without them.

The Baudeur family’s boat, The Beatrice, is wrecked, but Beatrice and her guardians survive due to Violet’s emergency repair work.

Beatrice remembers little of her guardians; she remembers Violet tying her hair and telling her that she saved her life. She also remembers Klaus squinting at books through his glasses, giving her notes on mountain climbing and telling her that without her he would have died in despair shortly after the demolition of the Razvrazka Hotel. She also mentions that even Sunny told her she couldn’t survive without her, giving her knowledge of making snacks from wildflowers and weeds, and notes that she recognized Sunny’s voice on the radio discussing her recipes.

At some point between this period and the time she turned ten, Beatrice broke up with the Baudelaire family for an unknown reason. She did, however, have a ring that had previously belonged to the Duchess of Winnipeg, the one Kit told Baudelaire to give to Beatrice.

I owe them my life, and now that we’re apart, I won’t rest until I find them again.

Beatrice sends several letters to her Uncle Lemony in hopes that he will help her track down her guardians.

In her first letter, she admits that he may not believe that she is who she says she is, but that she has been seeking help for years and that she hopes that he, as a detective, can tell her about his past so that can find Baudelaire, although she asks him to tell her during the day, as bedtime is quite early.

Her second letter was written on a typewriter in her office on the thirteenth floor of one of the nine darkest buildings in the city. From the window, she sees fire plants sprouting from the ashes. As she leaves the office, she finds his conspiracy card along with several notes belonging to him. She also finds a box of letters that are mixed together and in the wrong order. She again asks him to speak to her before she heads off into the hills to look for him.

Beatrice runs into some shepherds they’ve seen before, who have been living as a brae-man in a cave in the hills for several months, as if they’re waiting for someone. Beatrice trades them her ring for a yak ride to the cave; the only thing left there is a letter she collects and a piece of paper on which she writes her third note. She reveals that she’s been traveling alone for the past year, and that all she’s learned so far is that when he left the cave, he said he was in the mood for a beer; so she returns to the city. She becomes increasingly concerned as her memories of her guardians begin to fade. She returns to the city, first by yak, then on foot, then by yak.

Beatrice manages to follow him to a library, where he stands for nearly an hour staring at a glass case of staged poetry, including My Silence Knot. He then sits on a park bench, examines a surface ring before walking to the edge of the lake and then making a mad dash to Doldrum Drive and catching a bus. She follows him in a rickshaw and enters his office building, but he doesn’t answer when she knocks on his door. The next day,  Beatrice enters VFD secretary school and letter writing class to send a fourth note to ; the vice principal doesn’t believe the name she gave them upon arrival.

Beatrice settles into the office above his, now convinced that he doesn’t want to talk to her. She tells him in her fifth letter that she is desperate to find the Baudelaires and that she has been studying with the last few volunteers in hopes of finding them and him. Before heading to the hills in search of orphans and escaping enemies, she was given a sharp metal tool by her last instructor, which she used to punch a hole in her floor to drop her letter into the office of.

Somehow, in another attempt to connect with her uncle, Beatrice embarrasses herself in front of his friends. She finds him at a restaurant and asks a waiter to bring an apology card with his drink, telling him to tear the card in half when he finishes his beer if he doesn’t want to talk to her and she will leave on his own, but if he wanted to to meet her, she was the ten-year-old at the table in the corner. Given that the note is still intact in the file, it is assumed that he finally met his niece.

Beatrice appears in the Netflix series adaptation of The End as a baby. Although her role doesn’t change much from the books, Kit manages to hold her before she dies, and in the epilogue she doesn’t speak.

She also appears in the episode as her ten-year-old self (played by Angelina Capozzoli) in a subplot that includes the story of The Beatrice Letters, detailing her attempts to track down her Uncle Lemony, although in this he does not consciously try to avoid her. She doesn’t seem to be separating herself from the Baudelaire family as she doesn’t mention this predicament to anyone, meaning she just wants to meet her uncle. She narrowly misses him outside a cafe while riding a trolley to the remains of the Denouement Hotel, and then misses him again while in the underground VFD tunnels.

She finally manages to slip a letter under his door and he meets her for a beer. She brings the book from the island with her – in this adaptation, titled An Incomplete Story – and asks him if he wants to hear a story about their family. She discovers that he knows some of the tales, but is excited to tell him what happened after the End – namely when they were captured by Finnish pirates.
