Write it down INC. ! | Administration twists its attack on charters | Keeping the big picture front and center
Today I started to admit that we were a few days behind the release this week due to a technical issue with our technology platform. I’ll admit I’m pretty bummed about this because there’s been so much great stuff happening in Charterland this week to share. Fortunately, the dedicated team was able to come up with a solution, so I can tell you about it today. I apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience.
First, I want to encourage you to check out the CharterNation interview I did with CCSA Executive Director Mirna Kasrejon that was released on Friday.
It’s always so fun to reconnect with Mirna and we cover a lot of ground in just 8 minutes.

I then told Faulk that Carrie Irwin of Education Board Partners had asked me to join a discussion next week with Shavar Jeffries and Rick Kruse about the important role charter school board members can play in the current environment.
Finally, I’m excited to tell you that you’ll start seeing the content that Carrie Flanagan shares here.
As many of you know, Kerry was the CCSA Chief of Staff for a dozen years. Prior to that, she was chief of staff for the San Diego Unified School District and has a long history of working in public education, including serving as a classroom teacher in Virginia. As we continue to grow and continue to support it while continuing our day-to-day work, the Board of Directors recognized that we needed to increase our strength to handle our new level of responsibility well. And if there’s anyone who is the definition of a ‘power booster’, it’s definitely Carrie Flanagan. In the coming months, you’ll see her helping out with X posts and contributor columns. Kerry also helps us manage the onboarding of thousands of new readers as organizations turn to us to ensure all their people are getting the news. Anyone wishing to contact Kerry about any of these matters can contact her at [email protected]
Today’s post includes several under-reported but very important developments that I hope you find enough time to study and process. Let’s get straight to it.
Nasa Prepares Space Launch System Rocket For Artemis I Launch
I’ll start with the biggest charter school story that happened in the country this week, and I know everyone is following along…
The signing of the Illinois state budget doesn’t get much attention as it relates to charter schools. In fact, while googling today, I see that the words “charter school” are not in any of the articles related to Governor Pritzker’s signing of the state budget this week.
The state budget includes a new $35 million charter school space program that will provide about $550 per student to every charter school in Illinois, eliminating a significant portion of the funding inequity that charter schools face, given that we have to pay for them. our own premises.
35 million dollars? In a deep blue state? Against a broader landscape of backlash against charter schools coming from Democrats?
Uc Lecturer Workforce Could Strike Over Contract
We have red states where we seem to have the political wind and we are excited to add a few million to the existing program if we can get anything at all.
This is what happens when we get into the game. When we build structural advocacy and political power.
… that means new levels of influence in the Illinois legislature. The fruits of this work are now visible on the political side.
I’m excited that in the coming weeks, Andrew Broy, INCS CEO (and board member), will soon be writing a contributor column on this topic, explaining how this development came about.

For now, I will just provide a link to the INCS announcement that came out this week…
And that’s why, despite serving just 60,000 students, the Illinois charter school community punches above its weight.
We live in a time of major backlash against charter schools from a very powerful vested interest wing of the Democratic Party. This will always be a great challenge for our movement in the coming decades. But we are not powerless to do something about it. As an “INCS” ourselves nationally, we will be in a better position to weather any storm that comes our way.
Okay, now I’ll turn to what’s really getting the most attention in Charterland, the massive backlash that has resulted from the Biden administration’s decision to launch an attack on charter schools.

30,000+ comments on rules. (There were 28,500 48 hours before the deadline, and huge numbers poured in. I’m guessing we ended up with over 30,000.)
With the Democratic governor dropping his very fiery letter. (Really, it’s great. Check it out.)
… also wrote an excellent letter outlining the history of bipartisan support for CSP over the decades. (Seriously, this is another really good one. Check it out.)
Of course, it would be nice if we had more prominent Democrats submitting letters of opposition to the regulations.

… from a public official who isn’t so much a non-player on most matters related to public education, Ravitch had to explain to her readers who the hell she was.
Where are their 19 governors? Where are their 17 attorneys general? Where are their mutual parties? Where are their notable historical opponents? Where are their editorials that say the rules are so reasonable?
All they have is the AFT sending out a press release two days after the submission deadline (isn’t that weird that there’s a time limit?) highlighting the letter they supposedly submitted on April 11th.
, there’s no other way to describe the other side’s long-dreamed-of national assault on charter schools than to say it’s completely and utterly botched.
