Once you’ve chosen a topic, choose tips that match the students’ current difficulty level. For young children, this can be like asking, “What color is the sky?” with the answer “blue”.

Crosswords are a great exercise for students’ problem solving and cognitive abilities. Not only do they have to solve a clue and think of the correct answer, but they also have to look at all the other words in the crossword to make sure the words fit together.

If this is the first time using a crossword with your students, you can create a crossword FAQ template for them to give them basic instructions.

SUBJECT: TV POINTS (38A: Lots of P.S.A.s … or four squares in this grid?) — This is a Schrödinger puzzle where the entry can be one of two words (or both at the same time, as long as you enter ) letter!). In this case, in the four circular areas on the grid, you can use T or V, hence SPOTS TV.

Hello everyone, Rachel Fabi is coming to Rex today, in time to solve and write this clever Schrödinger puzzle for you all! My feelings about this puzzle evolved throughout the solution and during the time I thought about the puzzle after it was finished, so I’ll try to trace that emotional journey in this post (notice about (spoiler: I think this puzzle is awesome).

At first, I was confused by this puzzle. As can sometimes happen with Schrödinger grids, I didn’t really notice anything going on in the circular fields until I got to the last entry of the topic. I think it’s entirely possible that some solvers will finish this puzzle without revealing the theme, even with the revealer! And when I finally noticed the subject, I felt very warm about it. “Oh, this is one of those* puzzles,” I thought, using the T for ANTI-TAX instead of the rogue ANTI-VAX showing up on my screen. And then I looked at the cross key [48D: Like after the Oscar party]. And, almost against my will, I laughed. The Oscars ARE (probably, though I’ve never been around to confirm) LAVISH. And they’re after the Oscars, so…they should be LATISH too. And then I got a little angry again, because I doubt the -ISH qualification is necessary; party after the Oscars straight-til LATE! But the cleverness of the trick was beginning to sink in. I revisited the first circular area that I had confidently stuck to CORRECTLY and realized, ouch! If you parse “Separate” as a verb in [34A: Separate from everyone else, say], then REMOVE works here too!

And so, against my will, I loved this puzzle. I think TARNISH /VARNISH is probably the weakest pairing, just because they’re so closely related and still got such an awkward key [42D: An Outer Layer]. But CARTER/CARVER! Incredible mind! President Jimmy CARTER, who sold his peanut farm to avoid the possibility that he might one day be in violation of the bounty clause, and George Washington CARVER, the scientist and inventor best known for his work with peanuts, are both [41A: Famous Peanut Grower ] . If I had to bet, I would say that this was probably the starting point of the theme for the creator, who may have noticed the similarity of their names and professions and built the theme around it (I read the creator’s notes after that) I’m writing this post because this I hope to find out soon if I am right). Another interesting thing about this theme is that the tems are *not* symmetrical, which I think some people might consider to this grid, but I think that adds an extra layer of complexity to placing the black squares. Anyway, this is a long paragraph to say that this topic has become too much for me over the past hour.

Another positive aspect of this puzzle is the long charging, which is generally very solid. EATING ZAGG and THE TREE GODS are especially fun, and I also really like The Cartoonist, THE SKI SUITE, and ON TANIUS. On the downside, some of the short filler that holds this theme together is pretty rough. I personally could live without UIE (which the NYT can’t decide how to spell), GTI, ITO, ALEE (which the NYT Spelling Bee still won’t accept, last time I checked!), RCS, and especially, the nonsense KOO . Obviously, these things weren’t decisive for the editors or for me, because I still like this puzzle on balance, but I wish they had been avoided.

Overall, I liked this puzzle significantly more after solving it than when I did it, which is really just a sign that the theme is incredibly clever.

And now, if I may use this platform for a brief moment of self-promotion, I’d like to encourage you to sign up for the Boswords Spring Theme League, if you haven’t already, I’ll be contributing a puzzle to it. already! The competition consists of a mindless puzzle, at its own difficulty level, every Monday night through March and April, and a pre-season event the following Monday (although you can compete without participating in the live events). I’ve competed in several online Boswords events in the past, and I can say that the sense of community and shared love of crosswords at these events makes them some of those rare, wonderful moments of true connection and solidarity in this strange world of a pandemic. I hope to see you all there!Selection Panel Assignment- The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Crossword PDF Selection Panel Assignment- The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Crossword Word Document
