THEME: THE FIVE-SECOND RULE (35A: Suspicious Guide to Eating Food … or Hint to the Answers to the Starred Clues of this Puzzle)— The “second” letter in all the answers to the starred clues is “V,” i.e., the Roman numeral “five “; in each case the letter appears as an initial letter, pronounced “VEE”:
Banish From Society Crossword Clue 9 Letters
Word of the Day: IDI Amin(31A: Dictator Amin) — Idi Amin Dada Oumee( /ˈ iː d i ɑː ˈ m iː n , ˈ ɪ d i -/ , UKalso/- æ ˈ m iː n / ; c. 1925–16 August 2003) was a Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the third President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He ruled as a military dictator and is considered one of the most brutal despots in modern world history. […] Amin’s rule was marked by rampant human rights abuses, including political repression, ethnic persecution and extrajudicial killings, as well as nepotism, corruption and severe economic mismanagement. International observers and human rights groups estimate that between 100,000 and 500,000 people were killed under his regime. (wikipedia) (my italics)

You don’t see 14-width bars very often. It seems to me that the grids are more appropriate to increase than to decrease if they intend to move away from the standard 15×15 model. There’s a good reason to reduce this, since the revealer is only 14 letters long, and 14 is really awkward to handle in 15×15 grids; plus you’ll need another 14 to symmetrically balance the detector if you put it in a 15×15, whereas with a grid of 14 you can just put the detector dead center. It’s much more elegant that way. As for the theme itself, I raced through the NW and although I wasn’t paying attention to the “star clues”, I realized something was going on thematically with the “V” after I got TV DINNER and AV CLUB. Then I pressed the shutter button, and got a double dose of delight, because I liked the phrase itself … and then a few seconds later the thematic significance of the phrase hit me, and I liked that too. “Five” in the “second” place of each temer. And it’s not just that the second letter is a “V”, it’s pronounced “VEE” anyway. It would be very, very thin if the themes only had “V” as the second letter. Having it as an initial, standalone letter really tightens up the theme considerably…which brings me to one thing about the theme that I found really disturbing and inexplicable, namely the stray “V” in DMVS (37D: Real ID Issuers, in short) . Why would you let *any* non-thematic standalone “V” into this puzzle?! Your whole premise is FIVE SECONDS, ie the “V” is in the second place, but now you’ve introduced an auxiliary rule of FIVE THIRDS!? I’m sure it was hard to deal with all those damn “V’s” in the mesh, but for the sake of shine, luster and elegance, not to mention consistency, you can’t let the “V” get away with you like yes. Nails + board.
Off topic, there’s a little less to love. I like the long Downs OK, although the lead on “I CAN DREAM” seems weak (31D: “My lotto ticket could be a winner”). The key phrase sounds like something a not-so-smart person would say; there’s no inflection, no sense that the speaker has any sense of the absurdity of the odds, which makes it not a good clue for “I CAN DREAM,” which surely places the lottery triumph in Fantasyland, where it belongs. There’s also no reason for a “busy day” to be a FOG. I remember the days with effort better than the days without work. The puzzle always expected me to know a weird amount about “The Jungle Book” and MAN CUB went far beyond my normal crossword knowledge (KAA, BALOO, SHERE, etc.), but it ended up being deduced from the crossword (5D : nickname for Mowgli in “The Jungle Book”). I didn’t like the clue on the MINUS (41A: -) because I kept wondering why they left out the clue, or what clue this second part was… I took a few crosses to see that the dash was the MINUS symbol. I had CEDE before CAVE (28D: Surrender) and while I got SCARVES on my first guess, I held that “C” very loosely, knowing it could very well be an “N” (8D: Devours, with “down” ) I thought myself that the pun on ELISE (“rent”) is terrible, but I can’t yet decide if it’s so terrible that it’s good (59A: A good name for a house renter?). My current feeling is no, it’s bad. But things change.
The worst thing about the puzzle for me was seeing IDI Amin’s stupid face in it again. There are two good reasons to chase a guy away for good. First, he was a war criminal of the first order of ethnic cleansing (see “Word of the Day” above). It was never entirely clear to me why the world’s most famous murderous dictator (white) was never* allowed to appear on the network, but IDI AMIN (Black) was a main part of the network. Note: I’m not interested in comparative crime studies, I’m just noting that it’s proven that war criminals are more likely to appear online if they’re non-white. Perhaps “foreign” names are only more attractive to constructors because of their “unusual” combination of letters. I do not know. Another good reason for banishing IDI is pure name fatigue. This guy used to be ubiquitous, since both parts of his name are incredibly useful, as far as the net is concerned. To the great credit of the puzzle (and the constructor), its visibility has decreased radically in recent years. AMIN hasn’t appeared at #NYTXW in almost three years, and today is IDI’s first appearance in 2022. Here’s a list of IDIs from the last ten years; you can see how the flow has slowed to a trickle in recent years:
It would be great if the guy disappeared from the nets completely. I will never not notice, not comment, not belittle the appearance of a killer of this scale. Yes, it’s only three letters, but it’s an unnecessary distraction and a significant (albeit short) drop. Puzzle vibes are real! Let them be good!

P.S. in case you’ve somehow never heard of the FIVE SECOND RULE, it’s the idea that if food falls on the floor and you pick it up before the five seconds are up, it’s still good to eat. That’s a pretty good rule of thumb: food I drop on the floor, I still eat. The food I *find* on the floor … not so much. Banish From Society crossword puzzle.
