Biblical Beast 3 Letters – The number of the beast (Koinē Greek: Ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, Arithmós toû thēríou) is associated with the beast of Revelation in chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation. ), as well as other sources, such as the Codex Ephraim Rescriptus, give the number of the beast as χιϛ or χιϲ, transliterable in Arabic numerals as 616 (χιϛ ), not 666;

The number of the beast is described in Revelation 13:15-18. Many translations have been interpreted to mean “Here is wisdom. Let the wise man count the number of the beast…” where the strange Greek word πσηπισάτω (psephisato) is used. Possible translations include “count”, “calculate” and “vote” or “decide”.

Revelation 13:18 says that if one is wise and has understanding to calculate the number of the beast, which is the number of man, the number will be 666.
Although Irius (2nd century AD) confirmed the number as 666 and reported several scribal errors of the number, theologians are skeptical of the traditional reading.
616 as it appears in the Codex Ephraim Rescriptus (c; Paris—one of the four great uncial codices), in the Latin version of Tyconius (DCXVI, ed. in Souter’s Journal of Theology, SE, April 1913), and in an Arminian version (ed. Conybeare, 1907). Ireus was aware of the reading of 616, but did not accept it (Herr. V, 30). In the 380s, Jerome retained “666” by correcting the existing Latin version of the New Testament (commonly called the Vetus Latina).

How The Serpent In The Garden Became Satan
In 2005, a fragment from Papyrus 115 from the site of Oxyrhynchus was discovered at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford. It gave the number of the beast as 616 (χις). This fragment is the oldest (about 1,700 years old) manuscript of Revelation 13 discovered in 2017.
The Codex Ephraim Rescriptus, known before the discovery of papyrus 115 but post-dating, is written in full 616: ἑξακόσιοι δέκα ἕξ , hexakosioi deka hex (
Papyrus 115 and the Ephraim Rescriptus have led some scholars to consider 616 as the original number of the beast.
According to Paul Lewis, “The number 666 is 888 instead of 616, the analogy of Jesus’ (Gustaf Adolf Deismann) 888, or because it is a triangular number, the first 36 numbers (1) +2+3+4+5+6+.. .+36 = 666)”.

In Greek isopsephy and Hebrew gematria, each letter has a numerical value. Summing these numbers gives a numerical value to a word or name. The use of isopsephy to calculate the “number of the beast” is used in many of the commentaries below.
Preterist theologians generally support the interpretation that 666 is the numerical equivalent of the name and title of Nero Caesar (Roman emperor 54–68 AD).
Written in Aramaic, it can be calculated as 666 using the Hebrew numerology of gematria, and was used to speak secretly against the emperor.
Also, “Nero Caesar” in the Hebrew alphabet is נרו קאסר NRON QSR, which numerically represents the numbers 50 200 6 50 100 60 200, which add up to 666.
Mysterious Numbers In The Bible And What They Mean
The Greek word χάραγμα (charagma, “seal” in Revelation 13:16) was commonly used for seals on documents or coins. The charagma is well attested as an imperial seal of the Roman Empire used on official documents in the 1st and 2nd centuries.
In the reign of the emperor Decius (AD 249-251), those who did not possess a certificate of sacrifice (libellus) to Caesar could not continue to trade, a prohibition that goes back to Nero, which recalls Revelation 13:17.
Preterists argue that Revelation was written before the destruction of the temple by Nero’s banishment of John to Patmos.
However, most scholars argue that it was written after Nero committed suicide in AD 68. Our Sunday Visitor’s Catholic Encyclopedia notes that Revelation was “written in the latter part of the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian, probably about A.D. 95 or 96.”

It has been suggested that the numerical reference to Nero was a code for the emperor Domitian, but not a direct identification.
His style of rule resembled that of Nero, who heavily taxed the people of Asia (Lydia), to whom the book of Revelation was primarily addressed.
Also note the popular Nero Redivivus lege, which states that Nero will return to life; “After Nero’s suicide in AD 68, there was a widespread belief, especially in the eastern provinces, that he was not dead and would somehow return.
Why Is The Number Of The Beast 666?
Suetonius (XL) relates how the court astrologers prophesied the fall of Nero, but that he would have power in the East. Indeed, at least three false claimants stand as Nero redivivus (resurrected).
An Aramaic scroll from Wadi Murabbat, dating from the “second year of Emperor Nero”, mentions him by name and title.
In Hebrew it is Nron Qsr (pronounced “Nerōn Kaisar”). In Latin it is Nro Qsr (pronounced “Nerō Kaisar”).
The Greek version of the name and title is transliterated into Hebrew as Naroot קסר and given the numerical value of 666.

The Latin version of the name omits the second nun (נ) so that it appears as Nro and the Hebrew yields נרו קסר , 616:
Gematria is also used with the word Maometis (Ancient Greek: Μαομέτις); Scholars have characterized the Greek transliteration of the Arabic name محمد (Muhammad) as a dubious and obscure Latinization. A leading exponent of Mammoet’s interpretation was Walmesley, the Roman Catholic bishop of Rama.
“Of the various ways in which Muhammad’s name is written in Euthymius [by Byzantine historians], not one spelling is in question.
Seton (1992) criticizes this idea: Muhammad was often maligned and made the subject of legs, which preachers taught as fact.

For example, to show that Muhammad was the antichrist, it is asserted that Muhammad died in 666, not 632. In another variation on the theme, the number “666” was also used to represent the era. In time the Muslims would hold the power of the land.
In Quia maior, the cyclical call for the Fifth Crusade, Euthymius Zygabus and Zonaras write the name “Maometh”, Cedrus writes the name “Mouchoumet”, neither of them “Maometis”.
He wrote, “The Jews expected the Messiah as a great leader to restore the kingdom of Israel. They rejected Jesus because he did not fulfill this expectation … He would be the king of the restored Israel, not just the king.
