The piano plays an iconic role in “Bohemian Rhapsody” – especially at the beginning. We’ve taken parts of this song and created a piano cover version for you. This means that we will teach you how to play the melody (the part that is sung) with the left hand to accompany it. The result: a performance-ready segment of one of the greatest songs ever written!

We have also included chords for those who want to put their own spin on things. Now, this track is not the easiest, but it is very rewarding!

You will see that we have two flats, which means we are in B Flat Major. So, note in your head that all E’s and B’s are flat by default!

Now, Freddie plays this entire riff with both hands as an accompaniment while he sings. If you want to do this as well, you can play the octave with your right hand above the G and F.

Year Of The Cat

The left hand remains pretty similar here, except we scooch down to form a similar chord figure for Gm with our left hand. On the right side, watch out for the relationship.

The next bit gets a little crazy. Your hands will not line up. And when you practice slowly (which you should at first!) it seems a little strange. But play it at the intended speed and you will hear a clear melody.

Feel free to rewind the video a few times if this part is confusing for you. For those who are more visually inclined, here are some graphs with counts that may help. Note: each syllable (1, e, +, a etc.) is a sixteenth note.

BUT, if it helps to just listen to music and play what you listen to, you can do that too 🙂

God Save The Queen

AND, if this is too difficult (no shame!), what you can do is play and hold the chord in your left hand and play the melody above. It will still sound awesome!

The front part looks a little crazy, so take it slow. Practice the left hand yourself a few times first if you need extra focus here. There have been some unfortunate incidents…

📜🎹 BIT HISTORY! Producing “Bohemian Rhapsody” was no easy task. In Queen’s time, everything was analog and manual. Because editing is relatively difficult, recording requires a high level of commitment. Freddie was said to have entered the studio with the song fully formed in his head.

Cry For Help

Another part that looks a bit complicated is size 15-16, but we’re almost done so it’s hanging!

Practice the left hand first. On your right, you will notice a flat C. It’s just the same note as B natural. This part sounds a little funky, but I’ll fix it soon.

Now the wind song is down. You will descend chromatically through some chords, so again, watch out for the accidentals.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” has experienced a resurgence thanks to the film of the same name about Freddie Mercury and the formation of Queen. Freddie used the piano in many of his songs, in recordings, and on stage. He used concert grands, synthesizers, and even a harpsichord.
