Word of the day: ARSÈNE Lupin (54D: Detective Lupin) – Arsène Lupin (French pronunciation: [aʁsɛn lypɛ̃]) is a fictional thief and master of disguise created in 1905 by French author Maurice LeBlanc. He was originally called Arsene Lopin, until a local politician of the same name protested. The character was first introduced in a series of short stories in the magazine Je sais tout. The first story “The Arrest of Arsene Lupin” was published on July 15, 1905. Lupine appeared in 17 novels and 39 novellasby Leblanc, novels or short stories collected in book form, totaling 24 books. The number will be 25. In the year If you count the 1923 novel The Mysterious Tombs, Lupine does not appear in it, but the main character, Dorothy, solves one of Arsene Lupine’s Four Great Mysteries. The character has appeared in numerous books by other writers as well as numerous film, television, stage plays, and comic book adaptations. Five authorized sequels were written in 2008. Really disappointing. Weak in concept and muddled in execution. How in the world could the first “smoke up” bit be ARSON (!?) and then… somehow that’s just a *coincidence*!?! ARSON, which involves burning, involves smoke… is in no way related to the theme. oh no. When I realized that, this puzzle was over for me. Also *same-theme answer* your unfinished answer (featuring ASH) is somehow *also* the host of “late-night TV” just like JOHNNY C(ARSON)!?!?!?! Okay, so maybe JOHNNY CASH’s show didn’t technically air on “late-night,” but it certainly hosted a late-night show for two seasons. It’s just… it’s all confusing and stupid. Again, I can’t tell you how disappointed I am when the UNLE(ADED) “Up on Smoke” episode says *NOTHING*! I thought “Interesting” after the first answer ARSON gave me. Then the next answer gave me … ADED ???? That’s not even a word. be quiet . Kneeling up, kneeling up. So much fuss that the solution was slow. When you have to go slow for gibberish, wow, that’s not a great decoding experience. Also, all those clueless ASH ends up with a shortcut… just sitting there… what a mess. The title is “Go up in smoke” – I expect the “going up” part will have something to do with “smoke”. Getting out of ASAS is not enough. It’s boring. You know every theme ends with ASH. How exciting is this??? And it’s surprisingly wide!?!?! (22 instead of 21). Everything is so broken and pointless and again word of the day: depressing.

CRYER *and* CRIER? Interfering with each other? Are you sure. And I understand that confession was on “How I Met Your Mother” so maybe it’s important to him to keep that scene alive, but BROCODE ? As filling? Barf (99D: The famous “How I Met Your Mother” set of rules). JK Rowling is the world’s most famous “don’t call me transphobic” transphobe, so sure, why brighten the day with a double dose of her work (HERMIONE, that HOGW(ARTS HOUSE) baloney)? Televangelist (and Prosperity Gospel Huckster) Joel Osteen ? More yuck (40A: Televangelist Joel).DISCI ???? DISC-eeeeeeee????? There is no air in this puzzle, let alone an off-bright spot. Even the seat angle, at least the original one, was like “Uh… ok, I guess that’s the thing.” I keep looking at this grid and seeing things like RETNECBA (30D) and wondering… why? REECHO?! Bad in itself but when you get REHASH and RECOILS in the grid, bah SGS? Elroy? LDRS? In one hug? AROAR and AREAR? A muppet named after food poisoning!?!?!? The pleasure I get is in remembering ARSÈNE Lupin, whom I have just begun to enter. I bought “ARSÈNE Lupin, Gentleman-Leef” while I was in Minnesota. I was inspired to do this by the popular Netflix series “Lupin”, which I just started watching, and I should say, about the star of the show, Omar C or Omar SY (6) in New York City recently. His name begs to be doubted. He is “literally the second most popular person in France”. Too attractive. Anyway, thinking about the detective and the show and the New Yorker article is more fun than thinking about this puzzle. Off to read an old crime novel. good day.
