A toccata (from Italian toccare, literally, “to touch”, and “toccata” being the action of touching) is a piece of music usually for keyboard or crowded string instruments that contains fast-moving passages or sections, light fingering or other purely fingering passages , with or rather imitativeor fugalinterludes, generally emphasizing the dexterity of the performer’s fingers. Less often, the name is applied to multi-instrumental works (the opening of Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeobeing is a notable example). […] Bach’s toccatas are among the most famous examples of the form, and his Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 is one of the most popular organ works today, although some authorities dispute its authorship. Toccatas are inventive compositions for organ, often followed by an independent fugue movement. In such cases, the toccata is usually used instead of the more stable introduction. Bach’s toccatas for multipart harpsichordare works that incorporate fusal writing as part of their structure. (wikipedia)

So I guess I should start with my wrong letter. I wonder how many referees are out there who made the same error I did, scanned the entire answer and still couldn’t find the error. I’ve never felt so bad about a mistake, because even though the word I wrote there was kinda dumb and off, the real answer…also dumb and off. And the cross, well, tell me, if you tell me that there is an animal related to the Canadian coat-of-arms, and the letters in my place are _OOSE, there is no way that I am not going with the Canada GOOSE. , unless, of course, the cross is against that choice, and today, realistically, it was not. GOONY seems as likely an answer as MOONY (!?!?!) for 69A: Like a space student. I know MOONY as a member of today’s religious culture, or as a word to describe someone who is maybe kind of a dreamer… I honestly don’t know for sure, because nobody uses this word, I on the least. GOONY felt wrong, but MOONY sure doesn’t feel right, and nothing will stop GOOSE from feeling right. GOONY can mean “silly, crazy, foolish, stupid or awkward” (Victionary), and MOONY can mean “silly,” but also “absent mind,” which it connects to “pupil space,” but talk about that’s terrible editing. Just terrible. If you only made the clue GOOSE / MOOSE something that would put one of those answers in doubt, then the bad mess either way goes GOONY/MOONY. But no: the Ontarian (?) coat of arms (!?!?). Editing…yeah…editing, man. Apparently it is difficult. I do not know. So I had a mistake and pffffft, shrug, don’t care. My answer seems fine. If he doesn’t like the puzzle, he can make it a lump sum puzzle. Speaking of the puzzle: wall to wall tedium. So tedious, TEDIUM is written not once but twice on my printed answer (apparently forgetting that I wrote it the first time … or else was feeling very emphatic). Nothing interesting is happening at all. A huge “Why?” Amazing, really.

I don’t get it at all. So the clued theme answers have long strings of letters similar to other phrases…but who cares and so what? I really thought the “heart” part was somehow going to stand out, especially after I got PATRON OF THE ART… because ART is the “heart,” and a whole phrase, and I thought maybe there was some revealer coming that would make sense… something about the “state of the ART” something or other, I don’t know. But then my next “core” was fwionmw2p0qv8on4wpcquoa (actually, the equally meaningful character string “TSTHESAU”) and my dreams of thematic integration were over. This puzzle has the colorful answer “WHAT A NIGHT!” (30D: Epic party reminder) and has no other color. I don’t know… yeah, I don’t know. I’m trying to understand what could be fun about any of this. Not all weird word tricks are interesting from a solving point of view. This one was definitely not. Come down hard, hard after Saturday’s fantastic performance.

I don’t think anything needs much explanation. Here is the Escher Möbius strip in question at 10D: A view of the MC Escher Möbius strip (ANT ), for which I have no frame of reference:

I thought the word POLLSTER, but PollER , was fine (65D: A person who asks a lot of questions). Everything else seems pretty simple. Not worth talking about.
