Fortunately, most of the letters of the alphabet have unique shapes, so no matter how you change them, you can’t get confused with others. For example, the letter m looks very different from the letter x, and f is unlikely to be confused with the letter z.

If your child starts to read and occasionally reverses letters while reading or writing, it is completely normal. It doesn’t mean your child has dyslexia or a reading disability. Gently correct and move on.

However, if your child is eight years old or older, has received early reading instruction, and frequently makes reversal errors, it is important to take action to address the letter confusion.

How To Help Students With Letter Reversals

If you are working with older students, it may be too late to prevent confusion. You may have had a few false starts in reading, and may have already confused these troublemakers. They may come across the letter B and misinterpret it as the letter D. You can read the word bad as dab, or fashionable as fab. To provide gentle correction, you can take out matching phonogram cards and teach the letters separately, but your student will still blend them. If that’s the case, read on for four effective ways to solve the problem.

The demos below are for editing b and d inversions (the most common letter inversions), but the same concepts can be applied to any letter or number. You may only need to use one of these methods, but for really resistant cases, you will need to use all four methods.

Please note that it is important to focus on only one letter at a time. Wait until that letter is fully recognized before teaching another letter.

Reversing letters means your child writes certain letters (or numbers) backwards or downwards. This is sometimes referred to as mirror writing. It is different from transposing letters, which means changing the order of letters.

The most common letter reversal is b and d, when the child writes for d or vice versa. Another common inversion is p and q. An example of an inverted inversion is m for w.

Spelling or mirroring is not necessarily a sign of dyslexia. Some children with dyslexia have problems, but many do not. In fact, most children who change letters before age 7 do not have dyslexia.

If your child is reversing letters frequently by the end of second grade, however, you may want to contact your child’s teacher. Get the teacher’s feedback on what is happening and talk about next steps.

There is nothing wrong with helping children learn to write their letters correctly at any age. Even if your child does not have dyslexia or any other problem, there is no harm.

If your child is diagnosed with a specific type of language or visual processing problem, the sooner you introduce letter reversals, the less likely the habit will be. Your child will be better off breaking the habit early.

Work on one letter at a time. For example, if your child is copying b and d, start with b. Don’t introduce it to your child until he has very little trouble. After that, you can work on other significant changes like p or q.

There are many worksheets on letter reversals, but many are ineffective because they are not multisensory. Remember that children who struggle with reading, especially dyslexics, need multi-sensory learning because they lack muscle memory and symbol imagery.

Now, this doesn’t mean that students who write backwards have dyslexia or a reading problem, because it’s a common mistake that young children make and outgrow. However, it is common for some students, and in those cases, this strategy can help them with mixed letters, mirror letters, and reverse letters.
