You’ll be better at it with practice, but an easy way to tell the difference is to look for wordplay indicators – words or phrases that are a sure sign that something mysterious is going on. The clue refers to a word that sounds like a word in reply. This may be denoted by words such as reported, heard, or podcast.
If the answer has a double meaning, the clue might give you two different definitions. If the clue is just two words, there’s a good chance it’s a double definition. You can very rarely see a clue that is a triple definition.

The first letters or the last letters of the words in the clue make up the answer. First letters can be indicated by Origin, Leaders, Heads, Originally, Beginning, etc. Last letters can be indicated by End, Endings, etc.
Take the alternate letters from the words in the clue to get the answer. This may be denoted by a regular, alternate, weird or even, or similar phrase.
Spoonerism is usually a two-word phrase in which the sounds at the beginning of each word are swapped. This type of tip is less common and would always mention Spooner.
Sometimes, instead of breaking down into a wordplay and a definition, the whole clue functions as both a definition and a form of the wordplay. In the example below, the word “fiercely” represents an anagram of “angry” but “fiercely angry” also acts as the definition of the answer.
