In the case of essential oils, “pure” use refers to essential oils or blends of essential oils that are applied to the skin without dilution in carrier oils.

So, choosing not to remove essential oils when using them topically (on the skin) is called using them “pure.”

Because of their potency, the general consensus among well-known aromatherapists is that you should not apply “pure” essential oils to the skin unless under professional supervision.

How Essential Oils Became The Cure For Our Age Of Anxiety

“Do not apply undiluted essential oils on your skin. Easy going. The most common allergic reaction, which happens to hundreds, maybe thousands of people every year, is the skin, and is often caused by using unmixed essential oils.

For many body care products, it is recommended that essential oils do not exceed 2% of your final product’s weight or volume.

When choosing the right dilution for a single essential oil, blend of essential oils, or any product containing essential oils there are a few important factors to consider.

What essential oils or fats are being used? Since not all essential oils are equal in potency, each oil has a different amount that can be used in skin care products prior to skin damage  This is called

What Are Essential Oils? Uses And Side Effects

These dilution rates mostly depend on the chemistry of each essential oil. Since each essential oil usually has a different oil content that is safe for skin care products, it is important to find the proper dilution for each essential oil. For example, so-called “hot” essential oils like Cinnamon, Clove Bud, and Oregano require greater dilution than others.

How is the final product being used on the skin? All essential oils are not the same. It is important to research the properties of each oil in a recipe to ensure that it is suitable for use in the final product.

Some good questions to ask might include: Does the product stay on the skin after application, like a body cream? Does the product wash off as easily as soap? Is it usually used for small areas such as perfume or oil to treat spots?

Where is the final product being used? For example, is the product being used on the face, lips, whole body, or a small area of the area?

How To Make Essential Oils (with Pictures)

As you research dilution rates based on usage you will find a lot of information on the internet and in books but you will also see a lot of inconsistencies. I suggest you find a source you trust and always start small. Remember a little essential oil goes a long way!

However, if you choose to create a more specific blend then what, where,  and even what product is being used are very important.

If you are making products or using essential oils for yourself or your family there are a few things to consider, including age, health, medications, and skin dryness. Some people are also very sensitive to certain fragrances, especially those with allergies.

So you’ve had a long day and want to melt away your troubles in a warm, cool, fragrant soak. You may think that you can make your own bath oil by simply adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil or mixing it directly into the bath water. It seems logical since there is a lot of water to dilute the essential oils.

However, there is a major problem with this process, essential oils do not mix well with water or water-based liquids such as hydrosols, milk, or aloe.

When mixed with water the essential oil molecules float in small droplets on the surface (think of oil droplets on water).

These essential drops act like undiluted essential oils on your skin and can cause irritation. So please don’t just pour unlabeled essential oils into your bathtub!

Once you have found the carrier oil you want, you can start diluting the essential oils according to the proper dilution ratio required. Remember, start small!

When calculating dilution levels it is important that all essential oils are counted together. For example, if the total dilution should be 2%, that means 2% total of the essential oils used in that product, not 2% of each oil.

Although there is some wiggle room as dilution numbers may vary based on the above, for most body care formulations it is recommended that essential oils not exceed 2% of your final product’s weight or volume.

Two percent equals 12 – 18 drops per ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil depending on which dilution chart you use.

The Best Carrier Oils For Essential Oils

As you can see from the sample chart taken from the Tisserand Institute,  dilution chart percentages are based on the number of drops of essential oil to use per small portion of the carrier oil.

In my first set of examples, we are keeping the percentage of essential oils the same but increasing the amount of carrier oil.

First example: If you want to use 10 ml of carrier oil and you want a 2% dilution, then you need to use 6 drops.

Example 2: If you want to use 30 ml (1 oz) of carrier oil and you want a 2% dilution, then you need to use 18 drops.

In the second set of examples, we are keeping the amount of carrier oil the same but increasing the proportion of essential oils by adding drops.

Example 1: If you want a 2% dilution in 20 ml of carrier oil then you need to use 12 drops.

Example 2: If you want a dilution of 3% in 20 ml of carrier oil then you will need to use 18 drops.

Sadly, it’s true! When looking at dilution charts you will see inconsistencies. You may be wondering why there is conflicting information.

Dilution charts are often created with the home designer in mind. When consumers buy a small bottle of essential oil their intention is usually to use it in a diffuser or to create a small product for home use.

When working with small amounts of essential oils for personal use, the easiest way to measure them is by drop.

If you check the measurement conversion calculator online it usually shows that 20 drops is equal to 1 ml.

The Tisserand Institute dilution chart has been shown to work on the assumption that there are 30 drops per ml, not 20. They published their reasons in the article “How big is the drop?”

We are a curious bunch and decided to do our own little experiment. Five different people used four different drops and three different essential oils.

We used a scale to see how many drops we would need to make one gram equal one liter (of water).

Obviously, this was far from a scientific study though
