I will share and focus on my favorite practice supplies, how to use worksheets, as well as examples for 30 ways to write each letter of the alphabet in both upper and lower case.

I think it is very important to start with the most basic concepts when looking for worksheets because unlike what beginners think, Calligraphy and Writing are very different things.

As a very short explanation, lettering is about drawing, calligraphy is about writing. It doesn’t matter the tool used, it’s about the process of creating the letter.

When we do lettering, we correct, erase, retrace and print the lettering to fit the shape…

If you want to check this out in more detail, I wrote a full article on the difference between calligraphy, lettering and typography here.

To make the most of the worksheets that I share with you, in this article, on the website and in the Letter Vault, I have 3 recommendations so that you can save money when you practice, because printing sheets can be expensive, and some paper. light can also be expensive if you try to exercise as much as possible.

1 – Print the worksheet directly onto the HP paper I recommend and work with your brush pen directly on top of it.

2 – Print your worksheet on any print paper, and use tracing paper on top of your worksheet for practice

3 – Print your worksheet on any paper, and using a light pad, put a piece of my favorite HP paper on top so you can see the worksheet or the guidelines below for practice.

The thing about practicing with brush pens is that if you use regular copy paper, the tips of your brush pens will start to fray. To avoid this, you need to have smooth paper, so below is a list of my favorite options for cheap and super smooth options.

This is definitely a more economical alternative to paper, I use this exact paper to print all my drill grids. This is a great way to save money while practicing so you can use your custom paper for projects, and your brush pen won’t get damaged like regular copy paper.

This is my favorite paper for ink and also for brush calligraphy because it’s super smooth and doesn’t absorb all the ink like some people do, but because of this you have to be careful and wait for the ink to dry, or you’ll have a mess on your hands and paper you! It has 50 sheets and measures 9×12 inches.

After using the Cricut BrightPad for a few months, I’m a converted believer. It’s better than the older light box (linked below) little things like the fact that you have to push down to change the brightness prevents you from accidentally doing it like I often did with the old light box.

If you don’t want to use tracing paper, a light pad is the perfect solution (and also a good one if you’re trying to watercolor) among them, it’s worth its weight in gold (actually way more than it’s heavy because it’s super light!)

This is a new product from Tombow and a highly anticipated one. The classic black Fude pens are a favorite of many lettering artists (myself included) And they are the ones I always recommend to beginners because the tips are very durable, and they seem to last longer than double tips, plus they are a good size. one for beginners.

This is the box that I mentioned above, they are great fude brush pens, juicy and with a great flexible tip, they last a good time and if you use it with good paper (soft) the tip will not fray easily. The colors are really nice too, yay!

I really like the selection of different colors and pens and other tools that Tomow has added to this pack, you have pretty much everything you need to do your practice and experiment with colors without having to buy 12 full packs of double brushes, and since then . Your bundle gets a better deal.

These are my favorite brush pens at the moment, they have an easy to use tip and a built in ink supply combining the convenience of a regular maker with the expressive line variation of a traditional brush.

This is one of the most budget-friendly markers to start with, on Amazon though the price has dropped a ton, so keep an eye out when the price drops. Or you can always buy it from Blick, they have the best prices and offers per size.

I love how budget-friendly these markers are, they’re perfect for drills and the tips aren’t too soft (sometimes you might have to reshape them though) but other than that they’re perfect, budget-friendly, and they last a long time. Time. If you just started and did a lot of practice getting this box, you can thank me later 😉

But historically, it has 27, “Et” or Ampersand (and) used to be considered a letter of the alphabet, although today it is just another symbol in the English language. As @jonhudson.main shared on Medium:

Et is the Latin word for and. Its use can be traced back to the first century! This is where the ampersand was born. The symbol “&” is created as a ligature (combination of two letters) from the letter “e” and “t” or “et”. It was considered a letter of the alphabet until the early 17th century.– @jonhudson.main from Medium

A great example of usage I found via Artemy Lebedev shows the 26 letters of the regular alphabet with an ampersand at the end.

Ampers and became the most important element in European writing until the last letter of the English alphabet in all the foundations of the early 19th century (and began to be removed from it several hundred years later).– Artemy Lebedev

And while the ampersand is no longer considered a letter, it’s still loved by every letter enthusiast I’ve met. The evolution of the shape was great to see and also to explore.

Uppercase letters, also called Capitals letters are usually not the letters we start with when we are beginners because lowercase letters are simpler and require fewer strokes (for the most part) to complete.

But I want to start with the uppercase alphabet because it is usually one of the most researched types. Beginners need more help by finding different ways to write.

As I mentioned, lowercase letters are usually the first thing we start with when we learn to do brush calligraphy and letters. They usually require fewer strokes, and they are easier to understand once we have mastered the basic strokes.

So if you’re using the FREE worksheet I’ve provided at the bottom of the post, make sure you start with a lowercase letter first =]
