. It is least common and may appear in compound words with the base word. I would teach this in a group because there are very few words and remind the students that they are rare and short words.
When you start teaching long o, you really have to focus on spelling generalizations, homophones, and homographs. Learn one spelling pattern at a time, and once one is mastered you can add another. It is much easier to learn how to read than to learn how to write. Since they all sound the same and can appear in the same place, choosing the correct spelling pattern can be difficult.
Once students are familiar with all the long o spelling options and they understand open syllables and silent e syllables, you can teach them the process of determining the spelling pattern of a word.
When students come across a word with a long o and they need to figure out which spelling pattern to choose, here are questions they can ask:

Phoneme Grapheme Mapping – This is a great activity that really isolates phonemes for students to practice. You can get phonics and spelling through a grapheme mapping book and follow the long o lesson, or use my word list to do the same activity using sound boxes. See below for an example.

Use an easy to play board game where students need to take a card in turn and add a task such as reading aloud and ordering a word, or asking another player to spell it, or even Something as simple as writing the weather.
