The Caps Lock key on your PC or Mac’s keyboard changes the capitalization of any letter you type. If you want to type all capital letters, you just press Caps Lock once. Then, press it again if you want to type normally. But what if you use a Chromebook, Android, iPhone, or iPad? None of the products have keys specifically called “Caps Lock,” but you can activate the feature that allows you to type in all capital letters. It teaches you how to turn on Caps Lock when there is no Caps Lock key.

Whether you’re browsing the internet or sending an email or text, you rely on your Android’s keyboard. That means you also depend on its settings.
The on-screen keyboard is set to capitalize the first letter of every sentence by default, whether you want it to or not. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Some on-screen keyboard apps offer you the ability to turn off the auto-capitalization feature. Android’s native keyboard, Gboard, is created, and the process of deactivating this tool is relatively straightforward.

When it comes to using nouns and trying to figure out if a capital letter should be used in a sentence, you often find yourself scratching your head. You’re sure your teachers told you that this word or that should be capitalized, but you can’t remember the rules involved in trying to figure out what should and what’s best left alone.
You’ve come to the right place if you want to wrap your head around this though! We are happy to help you solve it and finally find out what makes a word a capital letter and what causes it to remain alone.
A capital letter is a letter at the beginning of a word written in an upper-case format, while the rest of the word is lowercase. For example, the Golden Gate Bridge has two capital letters ‘G’ and one capital letter ‘B’ in its name. It is important to try and learn when to use capital letters in a sentence to help with cohesion and feeling.
Nouns are usually capitalized words, but not all nouns are built that way. In fact, most nouns are best left uncapitalized, such as ‘mouth’ or ‘moon’. So where are the capital letters to this? Why is ‘Bridge’ capitalized in ‘Golden Gate Bridge’ but ‘bridge’ itself doesn’t need a capital letter?

It can be confusing, we get that! This is where proper nouns come into play. A proper noun is a noun used to identify an entity, rather than a list of things. To help clarify that, here’s what it means.
‘a bridge’ is kept lowercase because it can refer to any bridge when it is mentioned. It doesn’t matter which bridge, we just use it as an example.
‘The Golden Gate Bridge’ however is upper-case because it refers to a specific and unique landmark that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. For this reason, the words actually form a proper noun together and that is why they are left capitalized.
We hope this clears things up for you, however we will give you a quick list of all the proper nouns we can think of to help you remember. There are basically an infinite number of proper nouns out there that can be capitalized so there’s no chance (or even much point) of us covering them all for you here. We will do our best to cover a good range of them, enough to give you an idea of what to expect in capitalization in the future.
Capital Letters Days Sentences Worksheet
Most proper nouns fall under the category of names, places, companies, books, movies, and months. Anything that needs to be named as a capital letter in it. Let’s look at some examples.
As you can see, there are many proper nouns available out there that indicate how the capitalization should occur when it is mentioned. There are very few words (if any) that break this rule. The next time you write a sentence and you’re not sure whether or not you need to capitalize this noun or not, think: if it refers to something specific, it probably needs a capital letter . If it’s more general, maybe not.
There are a couple of exceptions to the rule of course. You’ll notice that in some books or movies on the list, some words are kept in lowercase. For example, the book ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has ‘of’ and ‘the’ hidden in lowercase in the middle of it, even though it’s still a proper noun, so why isn’t it capitalized? The simple answer is that ‘of’ and ‘the’ are not important enough in the title that they should be left capitalized. By default, your iPhone keyboard displays small keys until you tap the Shift or Caps key. If you, for any reason, don’t like the small keys and want to switch to an all-large design, you can do it easily with just a few taps.
“This affects keyboards that use a Shift key to switch between upper and lower case letters,” reads the feature description.
A Short Guide To Capitalization
When this is turned off, keyboard letters will be uppercase even if the Shift or Caps Lock keys are active. With Show Lowercase Keys enabled, letters on the keyboard will be lowercase until you press the Shift or Caps Lock key, at which point the keyboard will switch from uppercase to lowercase keys.
I find the second default behavior more logical because it makes it easier to distinguish between the two states of the incredibly confusing Shift key in iOS. But you can choose to put all uppercase if you want. Whenever you find the uppercase keyboard looking distracting, you can bring back the lowercase keys by turning on the toggle for Show Lowercase Keys.
Note that the above setting does not affect your actual typing. It just changes how the keys look on the virtual keyboard. For example, your MacBook’s keyboard has all the keys engraved with uppercase letters, but you can obviously type in lowercase letters and uppercase. The same will happen if you follow the steps above.
