Since the launch of KIPP Austin Brave High School this fall, our hard-working, highly creative students have explored expressive painting, life drawing, and conceptual art, among many other mediums and artistic styles. After much expressed interest in photography, we are excited to announce a Project Based Learning (PBL) course in photography, as well as an after-school photography club to develop students’ artistic and technical photography skills.

KIPP Austin Brave photography students will learn how to handle DSLR cameras (ie, manage settings, flash basics, composition), assemble a portfolio of experimental, portrait and landscape photography, and exhibit their artwork. Most importantly, students will examine complex ideas through a lens. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of photography as both an art form and a method of communication while developing their unique photographic style.

As a new high school, our founding students are spearheading the culture of our school, and set the bar for their academic performance, and, in this case, creative expression. We believe that all students, regardless of income, background or zip code, deserve every opportunity to reach their full potential. Your donation will provide students in our community with access to materials that will further develop them into well-rounded scholars. Your gift will set our students up for success by giving them access to a medium that can open doors to careers such as graphic design, art direction or photojournalism.

KIPP Austin Beacon Prep is a high school serving students in fifth through eighth grade. In our elementary grades, we lay the foundation for the academic, intellectual, and character traits that our students will carry with them throughout their time at Beacon Prep and beyond. When students first join us, they may be several academic years behind their more affluent peers. With this in mind, we will work with urgency to ensure that 100% of students are at the appropriate grade level by the time they leave Beacon Prep. We mold not only their academics, but also the necessary character traits and habits they need to be successful in high school, college and life. We work as a community to build the necessary academic and character traits that support acts of service and leadership.

At KIPP Austin Beacon Prep, our staff, students and families work together to empower students to break barriers inside and outside the classroom. Our students excel academically while also developing the tools and skills to successfully navigate the world and challenge the status quo. Armed with the power of our collective story, identity, knowledge and pride, our students are building a more just future for themselves and for those to come.

Leah Branderhorst ’11, originally from Holland, Mich., found herself following in her sister’s footsteps and applying to Trinity – ultimately leading her to find the career God had planned for her all along.

Navigating her first year at Trinity with an undeclared major, Leah took classes in several different programs, including education. In her second year, she made the decision to declare her major: secondary education with an emphasis on English education. Being part of a smaller group of English education majors gave Leah the opportunity to bond with the students and professors. “By getting to work with a smaller class, we got more hands-on practice.”

Through her second year of the program, Leah found herself gaining hands-on experience. “One of the things that Trinity does differently than other schools is that it puts you in a classroom as early as your second year. This allowed me to graduate and feel more confident because I had more experience,” Leah recalls.
